This is going to be an acrylic vs oil painting video, where I talk through the differences between acrylic and oil paint. I reveal whether acrylics or oils are better for drying times, color mixing & which is easiest for beginners. I share the pros & cons of acrylics and how painting techniques might differ from that of oil painting. Also the benefits of both painting mediums so that you can decide which is best for your project.

All these points are just my own opinion and I completely understand and respect that others might feel differently. I'd love to hear which you prefer to use so let me know below. Thank you all for your amazing support! 😁

I've used watercolours and acrylics for over 40 years. Two years ago I tried oils for the first time and I was angry with myself for not trying them before. I LOVE them.

There are odorless thinners and solvents available for oil painting. Also, Holbein makes an incredible line of water soluble oil paints! They’re called Duo and are in every way just like regular oils, and can be used in conjunction with them, but clean up with water! I love them!

I've personally found my "sweet spot" with acrylic gouache, it dries rather quickly but the colors are rich and opaque. It also dries with a very lovely sort of satin sheen very similar to oils. I personally think it combines the best things about regular gouache, acrylics and oils.

Acrylic then it is for me right now👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Reasons:
1)Small Apartment
2) No seperate Studio
3) A small 4 year old
4) Small budget, can’t afford solvents and cleaners for oils
5) Limited time to do Art

Thanks dear Katie❤️😍🤗

Between oils and acrylics, oil provides me more comfort because home girl is terrrrible with blending acrylics. =>.<= I used to LOVE painting in oils in college, but gave it all up for that digital life because lol, it’s a zillion times faster.

Now? My life and my channel seem to revolve around water-based mediums. I fell in love with watercolor sort of accidentally, and have been flirting with gouache a bunch lately even though I’m kind of terrible with it. =>.<= love being able to reactivate things and fix most of my mistakes-watercolor seems like the most forgiving medium to me right now but if I ever end up understanding gouache, I might change my mind!

I’ve tried oil but didn’t like it that much, I use acrylic but I prefer watercolor over all paints honestly.

Add flow retardant to acrylic paint. This will slow down the drying rate alot. Its definitely a God send!

I've just recently tried out acrylics, and after using oils I just can't come to grips with them at all. I tried painting a poppy and the colours just seemed way too dull, so I painted over the poppy in oils and the colours are lovely.

I need to try oil for these reasons, I kept agreeing with everything you said about acrylic lol I’m ready for a new medium

Oils all the way! 💗 I really enjoyed this video (basically every video of yours) ~ if someone is hesitant about using oil because of toxic solvents, I'd suggest Gamblin brand oils. They are expensive, though. They do have a slightly more affordable line, 1980 line, that is still better for you than most other oils and is still cheaper :)

I'm getting more into painting as a hobby since I've noticed how it helps me calm down, and let my frustration go. Right I'm starting with acrylics cause I'm just practicing getting started. Once I see myself getting use to it I'll try oils since is a bit more "advanced".

I’ve been binging acrylic vs oil videos, and it’s really cool see everyone’s opinions. Some people swear by oils, some only use acrylic and others use both!

I usually paint with acrylics but recently tried water mixable oils and oils. I really loved the vibrancy of the colours with the oil, they really pop out and make a huge difference in your painting. I like how they take longer to dry, and I love how they blend. They are definitely more work when it comes to clean up.

I paint in acrylics and they are way more vibrant than any oil paints ive ever used. I also mix little bits of gloss medium with every colour as i use them.

Thank you very much for this video. I recently have decided to take up painting because I'm disabled with a lung disease. I have been curious about oil. I have been painting with Acrylic. So this video just saved me from potential health issue, disappointment and waste of money. THANK YOU!!! Very much!

Hi Katie! I love your work! This video was very helpful in making my decision to stick with acrylics for now. I have also found that by adding gel mediums to my acrylics one can achieve that vividness and brilliance as oils give. Also, there are very buttery creamy heavy bodied acrylics available which I love to play with by using those mediums I talked about. Now, with that said, in the future (retirement), and when I have a dedicated space for oils, I'd really like to try my hand at these. I'm just starting to dabble in watercolor right now, so oils will be next, I imagine! ;) Thank you so much for sharing!

this video was really helpful and I love how she gives options for each type of paint to fix minor inconveniences when using the two

very helpful, thank you! I was thinking of trying oils, but winter is near and I paint in my home, so i'll wait till spring when i can open the windows and doors. i use acrylics, and you're right, they do dry quickly, which makes mixing and blending a bit of negative when using them.
