The Metacritic Game Reviews Problem. | Former PS Boss Opens Up About Future Of Games. - [LTPS #586]

This week now means PS Plus just got a lot more expensive. And it also means Baldur's Gate 3 is out on PS5! With that, we touch on the Metacritic review scores discourse that always seems to crop up with big releases. Elsewhere in the week, we have a patch for FFXVI, 19 inches of Venom, and a possible video game strike coming? Also Shawn Layden! The former Head and Chairman of Worldwide Studios provided some comments about the future of the games business. Definitely some good discussions going on this week. Id love to see more unique uses for the Duelsense feature too. I love in Returnal how its a half press of R2 for primary fire and then a full press for secondary fire, that stuff is so cool. Im really hoping Spider-man 2 devs come up with some fresh features with the controller

People give metacritic too much attention, i watch gameplay and opinion from a few people that i value.

If anything steam review system is the best you can see hiw many hours someone played.

As far as the Metacritic stuff goes, Gamespot recently put out a video about playing more 7/10 games because that's where most of the niche and creative stuff will be and you may find something more tailored to you than the next AAA blockbuster. Definitely something we all should be thinking about.

Metacritic reviews cannot be considered as a means to judge a game's quality. And im speaking about both user reviews and journalist reviews. And neither does the Game Awards.

I think we need to go back to having more AA games instead of everybody doing super productions. I know most consumers fall for expensive graphics but in my case I miss more risky games with different art and creative style. The same thing has happened with mainstream music, there are basically 2 or 3 styles and everything feels manufactured and studied by boards. I dont know if I explained myself properly 😅

Imagine caring about Metacritic...
I even play games that are rated 6 or below, and i still enjoy them for what they're. People need to understand that everyone has a different opinion.
So just because they didn't like, doesn't make it a bad game.

Just like I don't care about Starfield or FF16.

I've never played a game like Baldur's Gate 3 before but bought it on PS5 after how well it did on Steam and all the rave reviews from people. I was nervous about the combat and getting used to a play style so different from my usual, but surprisingly it's pretty approachable and after a while you start to pick up on it. I highly recommended it to anyone on the fence about getting it! Can confidently say it is one of my favorite games so far.

The Metacritic rant is so on point. Every time a major release happens fanboys on both sides use MC or OpenCritic to bash the game on the opposite console. I saw Xbox fanboys bashing FFXVI when it got an 87 and I see PS fanboys bashing Starfield as it got an 86, literally one point difference so who the hell cares? Both are great scores! People gotta chill sometimes.

I've been loving Baldur's Gate 3 SO much since I started playing when EA for PS5 launched. My only gripe is sometimes it can be hard to know which active quests are essentially "locked" and can only be progressed through what I assume to be act changes.

For instance, I have a companion quest where I need to find an alternate way into a location and for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to get there. After peeking online, I learned that I actually enter it later in another act but there was a message telling me to wrap up any loose ends (I assume this is the act progression?) which made me fear that I would fail that particular quest.

If The Last of Us part 2 wasn't already a big FU to the fans of the original, the promised multiplayer (like the day one Factions) is now over a 3 year broken promise.

One voice actor found out that her voice has been used by more than one company. She signed a contract that allows that company to sell her voice to other studios, and she gets nothing out of it.

Any business that tries to pull the rug on the consumers and employees by using 'AI voice acting' is instantly on my to avoid list.
