G.L.A. Harris: Women in the U.S. Military: Gender Hierarchy and Discipline in a Warrior Culture

Dr. G.L.A. Harris is this year’s visiting Fulbright Scholar in the Department of Political Science. Dr. Harris is a professor of public administration in the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon where she teaches in the MPA, MPA:HA, MPP and Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy programs. She leads the Human Resource Management (HRM) specialization of the MPA program and the Graduate Certificate program in Nonprofit and Public Management. Her research lies in examining the recruitment and retention patterns of the military, particularly as they pertain to women and underrepresented minorities; gender equity; civil rights; and the health and healthcare disparities of certain vulnerable and veterans groups.

Dr. Harris’ 2015 book Living Legends and Full Agency: Implications of Repealing the Combat Exclusion Policy won the 2017 Outstanding Book Award from the American Society for Public Administration’s (ASPA) Section on Personnel and Labor Relations. She has two forthcoming books – Blacks in the Military and Beyond (with Evelyn L. Lewis, M.D.) and Women Veterans: Lifting the Veil of Invisibility (with R. Finn Sumner, Ph.D. and M.C. Gonzalez-Prats, M.A.). In addition to her scholarly background, Harris has extensive experience in private sector human resource management and is a lieutenant-colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
