This video shows the Top 20 countries with the most total cumulative International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) gold medals since 1967.

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual physics competition for high school students. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. The first IPhO was held in Warsaw, Poland in 1967.

Each national delegation is made up of at most five student competitors plus two leaders, selected on a national level. Observers may also accompany a national team. The students compete as individuals, and must sit for intensive theoretical and laboratory examinations. For their efforts the students can be awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals or an honourable mention.

The theoretical examination lasts 5 hours and consists of three questions. Usually these questions involve more than one part. The practical examination may consist of one laboratory examination of five hours, or two, which together take up the full five hours.

As a Physics related undergraduate from China, I know the 49th IPhO absloute winner Yang Tianhua杨天骅 well. Because my girlfriend used to be his schoolmate. What made me crazy is that he got the prize just two years after he first heard IPhO games at the second year of junior high school. I believe that he will be the top physicist among the world in the future.
Also I respect USSR, for its top-level Physics education. When I read ten-volume series of textbooks : Landau's The Course of Theoretical Physics, a voice from my brain tell me" silly, you 'd better quit school "

Chinese societies (Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese Chinese, Singaporean Chinese) are good at Physics and Maths. It is even reported that most Physics and Maths Olympiad winners in the USA are Chinese American.

Indian logic: If India is not good at something, Indian will say: this is not popular in India. The result: Nothing except for cricket is popular in India....

I'm not surprised with the USSR/ Russia performance as they have a very strong educational system with emphasis on the sciences. To this day, they're still fond of Olympiads, no wonder they're the highest ranking European country on the list.

AMAZING. PISA, chemistry, maths, physics, China grabs them ALL. And they started late, like 1987? Do they even have text books in English? Have you seen their IQ ranking?

Imagine if each Chinese City or Province (comparable to most of the European countries) are allowed their own teams... Probably 10x the medals for China.

So sad for India, 45 medals and 8th rank internationally shows the amount of potential, but all the innovation and creativity is crushed by the awful 'education' system
