'Faux shock in the Left': Andrew Bolt discusses Trump on Kamala Harris' racial identity

Sky News host Andrew Bolt discusses Donald Trump hitting out at Kamala Harris’ racial identity during the National Association of Black Journalists convention.

“So much faux shock in the Left,” Mr Bolt said.

“Now, Trump typically went too far. He got too personal and brutal and may have turned off many voters.

“But Trump does in his clumsy way hit on an uncomfortable fact for Democrats, who are desperate to present Harris as a black candidate … to get black voters to identify with her.”

My point is this: politicians who present their racial heritage as something depending on what would benefit them the most at that moment are playing with the race card in a way that is dishonest in my opinion. And the more times they do that and the more variations they use when presenting their racial heritage, the more dishonest they are in my opinion. VP Kamala Harris has done that so many times and with so many variations that she has started to look dishonest to me because of that.

I always thought that if you were in the USA and you refereed to someone as "black", you were talking about an African American. Not a person of Indian or Asian descent. And if she has previously said she is of Indian descent, then why shouldn't you question what she says, if she then says she is black. I agree with Bolt. What Trump said was clumsy, but it was a valid point.

This is not the first case in the US where a politician's ethnicity is unclear. An ethnicity or ethnic group is a group of people who identify with each other on the basis of perceived shared attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Elisabet Warren (D) had notified administrators at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard law schools that she had partial Native American heritage and was listed as a Native American faculty member in a national law school directory. She had lied about her heritage and Trump started to call her for Pocahontas. VP Kamala Harris has already presented herself as Indian, as Asian, as Asian Pacific and Pacific American. Now she presents herself also as African American. Interesting to follow what nickname VP Kamala Harris will get from Trump, if any, for presenting herself in so many ways.
