I was atheist my entire life, but now have come to the conclusion that the only way the development of consciousness and life could have occurred by random luck is:
1. There are an infinite number of universes and we just happen to be in the one that is “just right.”
2. The universe we live in is, itself, infinite and would eventually create a planet like Earth and let it have the tremendous amount of luck it took to bring about highly intelligent life.

I think one, or both, of these criteria have to be met for all this to possibly be luck.

Of all the animals on Earth, .. Humans are the only ones that know that...
... everything dies eventually, .. including ourselves and everyone we know and love.
... there are fathers, as well as mothers, .. but only fathers can be cuckolded.
... we can no longer survive on the food we find merely by happenstance anymore. We must work to raise our livestock and grow our food.
... we seriously wonder and worry about how does Consciousness, .. much less free will, .. arise in a matter compatible with our present understanding of Physics.
... merit & talent are distributed in a Pareto distribution in which a very small fraction of those engaged in any creative enterprise do most of the original productive work.
... unlike all other animals, Humanity can no longer be satisfied living upon the basis of a mere _instinct for survival_ that is automatic, equal, and sufficient to survive and prosper.

It is this last attribute that makes Humanity the most anxious & self-conscious animal of all, .. and forever marks us as no longer living in paradise. Humanity must choose it's values; but upon what basis are such choices to be made?
