A summer spent in Egypt brought health inequalities to light for Columbia MD/PhD student Abdul El-Sayed, and he returned determined to help reduce them in the United States. We spoke to El-Sayed about the transformative experience he had in Egypt, how his life as the son of Egyptian immigrants shapes his view of American life, and how his patients bring a fresh perspective to his research. El-Sayed is one of 30 recipients of the 2012 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans.

All those years wasted in medical school and MD/PhD. Now it's a new sleeper cell for politics. Someone more deserving should have earned that seat in a US Medical School.
