Nearly two decades after Nepal’s royal family was gunned down in a palace massacre, calls to restore the monarchy are growing louder. Thousands rallied in Kathmandu, demanding the return of the king and Hinduism as Nepal’s state religion. Frustration with political instability and corruption has fuelled nostalgia for the monarchy.

Just when the citizens were getting a taste of what a good governance can achieve as in Balen Shah’s work. Rather than looking forward to grooming and encouraging young and efficient leaders, the Nepalese have decided to lean towards corruption.

There were at least half a million people covering 9 km of the 6 lane highway. It's not a turn away from democracy, our democracy was much strong with constitutional monarchy. There are events where the supreme court dismantled the very committee the king made, and the kings always obliged. Now we have autocratic democracy since the abolition of monarchy, where no one other than three people can rule. The corruption is record high, courts are run by political setups. So we are calling for a directly elected prime minister with constitutional monarchy (in place of ceremonial president). There will be publicly elected parliament and everything, the only change is King in place of ceremonial president.
