Thank you so much for this excellent reporting and analysis. Your conclusions make sense to me. One of the things I had been noticing with dismay recently - since summer 2016 actually - is articles in some of the publications I have most respected for many decades - including the New Yorker itself - which have shown some truly shocking lapses of focus on reliability of evidence, resembling far too much the types of smear and propaganda srategies for promulgating lies which have been well documented by many of our best historians and journalists.
We can not trust that something is true just because it is asserted in a publication we have been in the habit of trusting. The focus on robust evidence is still the most critical test of reliable reporting, and compass to truth seeking. The anti-Trump fervor seems to have been blinding the eyes of too many to this most basic principle.

Please always continue to insist on a firm clear focus on well documented evidence and clear analysis, in your reporting and in every report for which you may be responsible, throughout your career - God knows we need it.
