This is a good way to test to see if your transfer case is good without removing it from the car. You should NOT be able to turn that gear by hand so easily.

I replaced the transfer case and actuator motor. Also need to re-adapt the transfer case using the BMW DIS software or other tool that can re-adapt the transfer case. (Reset/Reconfigure the transfer case). Other issues with the car in general occured. I have replaced the starter, front shocks, valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, crankshaft sensor, solenoids on front of motor, coolant fill tank and much more.

Dang, I've been searching for about 3 months for this exact issue. my shaft will freely spin 360 in both directions so my assumption of the friction plates being the culprit.. worn/stuck appear valid! I wanted some confirmation before I spend the $$ on the plates, just to sell the car. (but in MN, a RWD rocket like my X3 will be far lesser value than the AWD!

Para evitar problemas de transfer, siempre hay que cambiar las cuatro ruedas

I think that this is not broken a transfer case. I have the same on my workshop now, the actuator works properly but I can turn this shaft for 360° easily with my hand

I heard that the test is done to the right, not to the left. It's true?

Good Video, did you have any noises rattling, I have a noise on my 2007 BMW X3 E83 and sounds like marbles or bad bearings right by the transfer case, bottom center of the car, but I'm not sure if it is the Catalytic Converter or Torque Converter. Transmission, Transfer Case etc... It only happens when the rpm's are at about 12-1400. Park, Neutral, Drive and Reverse. Anyone? Help if you have had this problem and know what it is. Peace-

Question(My 2007 x3): My transfer case was changed to a used one and it removed the ABS/Brake/4x4 lights from being on. Now I hear a scratching sound from the back that was NEVER present before. Do you have a professional opinion what could be happening or what could be checked?

Hi. I have 2008 X3 3.0 si. I have replaced transfer case actuator but still 4x4 light is on. And car still running with rwd which is lasy. Do I have to pull it out again and check the transfer case shaft now ? What happen if was lose like yours ? And what happen if was not lose ?
Any idea how can I fix it.
(Actually I changed battery newly and this all lights came back after I changed battery and I tried to reset the 4x4 light with turning steering wheel all the way to left and all the way to right and I was off couple times but only for 1 minute, and it came back on again).
