Their music is a big part of it too. I think Rare always had the best music of any western game developer.

I can understand everything they say, but thank you for putting on subtitles. I appreciate things like that. :)

Prior to Rare being bought by Microsoft, the company was managed in an odd way that required very little supervision. Sometimes it didn't work out (eg. the c64 games made by Rare's similarly managed predecessor Ultimate Play The Game) but the point was to prevent employees feeling detached from the final product, so ironically it was good to fail sometimes since it allowed management to show everyone that they would never micro-manage, no matter what.

Since Donkey Kong Country at least, beautiful art design that any graphic designer would or should be proud of. Graphical touches that are often best or amongst best on the system up to that time and sometimes long after. Great music. Sometimes deliberately eccentric level design - but with a logic to it - not wacky just for wacky's sake. Fantasy but grounded - not pretension. If a game, even if it's in the same series, looks and atmospherically feels exactly like a previous game by Rare or by another developer then it's not a Rare game.

I just unlocked this video on my copy of Rare Replay but there's just music playing through the whole thing, no audible voice track heard. is there an option to turn the voice track on or off? I'd like to actually hear what they're saying.

Back in the 1990s, I could often identify a Rare game by whether it was a clone of a Nintendo game or not (Mario Kart / Diddy Kong Racing, Mario 64 / Banjo Kazooie, etc), or - in the case of BattleToads - a clone of the Turtles. These days, it's mainly Retro Studios who produce the Nintendo-esque games, whereas Rare has been stuck making Kinect games for the past few years : / (unfortunately)

I didn't know Conker was made by British people.
