The Grapes of Wrath was banned? Wow...that farmers association was a touchy crowd.

Great timing! I just finished reading The Grapes of Wrath about an hour ago, so it was great to learn a little bit more about the author. Being from Australia and not reading any of Steinbeck in school I had no idea how important he was to American literature. I'm glad I picked it up and am looking forward to reading more from him! :)

Fun fact. I grew up in Salinas and only moved away in 2009. I love John Steinbeck and am glad to have had the opportunity to grow up in that area. I wouldn't want to live there now, hence the moving, but it was a good experience. Especially for a book lover like me. The junior college in Salinas, where I attended, offered an English class solely on John Steinbeck. I'm so glad to have taken that class because I hadn't really read any of his books until then. Awesome video, Sam. I know you filmed it a while ago, but I just saw it and had to watch. :)

I read Of Mice and Men in high school, and literally yesterday finished The Grapes of Wrath. I’m now halfway through Travels with Charley and then I plan to start on In Dubious Battle. He’s a fascinating writer with a scathing wit that makes you think about your own life in terms of freedom, quality and prejudices. Real eye-opener.

Perfect timing! I am currently reading East of Eden and it is always valuable to pick up more background information about the author. Steinbeck is one of America's finest! Interesting to know how The Grapes of Wrath was THAT controversial. Happy Reading! :) -Josh

I love this author. I love how nerdy he was over King Arthur and how he took a yearlong trip to visit all the places mentioned and research.

We went on a school trip to the Steinbeck Museum in middle school and I HATED it at the time.  Now that I'm I fan I wish I had appreciated the experience more.  You should try out The Moon is Down if you haven't picked it up yet.

Makes you wonder what that first draft of Mice and Men looked like, huh? Wonder how many other authors have had their great works imbibed by canine companions? Love these videos, Sam!

Russian Journal was not written during WW2, contrary to this report, it was written about 5 years after the war. In fact, it was written at the onset of the Cold War.

I see that you have read the Inheritance series. So far I have read Eragon and Eldest. I just started Brisingr. Do you recommend any other series that are similar to the Inheritance series?

When asked if he deserved the Nobel Prize, Steinbeck said 'frankly no.'

He won it as a compromise choice after Karen Blixen (Out of Africa) died that September.

This is a propos of nothing (oh, and great video by the way!) But since you did this, I was prompted by a language detail that confuses me: Why do people say "most well-known" and not "best known"? More important than that is: my dad's birthday was the same as Steinbeck's. And where I went to college - UC Santa Cruz - is just up the road from Monterey and shares the same basic amazingly beautiful vibe. I hope it survives the Apocalypse that, judging by how things are going, is about to happen... Jeez Louise but people are going crazy all over!

Reminds me that I've been meaning to read more Steinbeck.

Man, that would suck to have your dog eat your first draft before the days of digital backups.

I would like to see a video about Frank Baum who wrote the Wizard of Oz books!  He probably was a weird and interesting guy.
 Love these videos!

I've never read one of his books. I feel like I should do that.
