The REAL Reason Why Senior Players Are BANNED from Playing at The Olympics

As we all know, football at the Olympics is for under-23 players, and it’s pretty strange because it’s not like this with any other sport at the games. I mean, look at basketball, for example. Lebron James, Steph Curry, Nikola Jokić, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo…all the biggest stars in the NBA always go to the Olympics to represent their countries regardless of age or status, but we never get that in football because senior players have been banned.

Heck, even women’s football doesn’t operate like this. At the Olympics, there’s no age limit for women’s football; any female player of any age is allowed to feature at the games. But it’s not like that for the men.

It's always so strange to me to see that virtually every other sport treats the Olympics as something that's at the very least on the same level of its World Cup, if not more (look at basketball: the USA might avoid bringing up some of their mega stars to the World Cup, but when it's Olympics time you can bet on the fact that they'll bring in the absolute best team they can build), and yet, when it comes to football, the Olympic tournament is an afterthought.
It's like all sports see the Olympics and think "this is the pinnacle for our sport, the greatest moment, who will be crowned the absolute best in this sport?", but then football's like "oh yeah, the Olympics, it's a thing that exists"

The reason Lamine Yamal decided to play with the senior team of Spain in the Euro (and somehow won the tournament) was also funny. He didn't want to end up like Pedri after playing both Euro and the Olympics.

I don't think that any footballer that plays most matches for their club and every game at either the euros or copa america should even consider taking part in the olympics as they will be mentally drained and damaged going into the start of the new season. It's one thing to win a medal in the olympics but you don't get paid by your country, the club you play for pays your heavy wages.

This is possibly why football fans sleeps when the Paris Olympics started as Euro and Copa América ends.

The first time I saw an Olympic football tournament was in 2004, and, as an Italian, I remember how there were huge talks and theories as to which stars were going to play for the Azzurri. I mean, some of their great players (like Gilardino, De Rossi or Chiellini) were Under 23 so they were certainly going to go. It was so fun, with newspapers making theories. Was it going to be Buffon? Will they bring in Totti and have him miss out some group stage games (due to what happened at Euro 2004 when he got suspended for spitting on a Danish player)? Were they going to have a cheat code and call in 22 year old Cassano to save one slot for another top player? Were they going for experienced legends about to retire like Baggio and Zola, to give them one last dance?
In the end, they settled on Pirlo, who captained Italy to a bronze medal. That game was special because it was played against Iraq, and the moment when both teams posed together, as a message of peace, was so touching.

I don't know if it was a real rule, but the only time netherlands played was in 2008, so there was more attention about it

So i heard about it that players who played euro 2008 were not allowed for Olympics. I dont know if for real and for other countries.
But it won't help. But probably it was only rule in my country so we're screwing ourselves

I think FIFA have been very selfish to ban professionals from the Olympics. The Olympics are meant to promote inclusivity, which FIFA clearly want to prevent with their ban.

I do think limiting the amount of professionals at the Games is a good thing, allowing the youngsters their time to shine, but there clearly could be a bit more players to include in the squads. Why not 5-6 pros, since 18 players are taken to the Olympics ? Even the youngsters must deserve their Olympic spot, meaning limiting the number of spots gives value and prestige to the call-up.
