I was part of the flight simulation team who worked on the UH-1N helicopter simulator. I worked on autorotation, vortex ring state, and all kinds of control response tests. It was so cool to work with Navy pilots. The UH-1N was so expertly designed in the 1960's. I am still amazed at what the engineers accomplished back then.

For anyone who likes the Huey, I highly recommend reading the book “Chicken Hawk” by Robert Mason. That book got me hooked on helicopters as a kid and especially so the Huey.

I have seen this Huey flying near Jean, NV. I wasn’t sure if it was civilian but now that I see it landing at Jean airport I have my answer. Pretty awesome to see it flying. The Huey chop sound is like no other!

Look at the AOA of that main rotor as he kisses the ground, I don't reckon you'll see any more textbook than this.

Helicopter autorotation is an emergency procedure used when the engine fails, listen and learn because you'll need to follow specific these steps. First, reduce the throttle to idle and lower the collective control to decrease rotor pitch. This will initiate a controlled descent. As you approach the ground, raise the collective slightly to cushion the landing. Aim for a clear and safe area for landing and prepare for a run-on landing. Just before touchdown, perform a quick flare to reduce the descent rate. After landing, secure the helicopter and ensure safety. Remember that autorotation should only be attempted in emergencies and requires proper training.

I was in the United States Coast Guard in 1973 and while practicing "helo-ops" watched from a 42-foot cutter, a Syscorski HH3F helo auto-rotate to its doom.

I'm pretty sure the pilot panicked.

Everything was going good, until it was about 100 feet high, then the collective feathered the main rotar and it dropped like a rock.

I personally radioed the pilot telling him NOT to deploy flotation, because the starboard door was open and Hh3Fs deploy port flotation first, before starboard.

He asked my rank (PO3) and told me he wouldn't take orders from a noncom. Unfortunately for him, ALL radio traffic was being recorded by our group command in St. Petersberg, FL.

It sank within about 40 seconds after impact.

No lives were lost, but one officer's commission was resigned.

Care to guess which officer resigned his commission?

I know nothing about flying, but I suspect that was one very skilled pilot to do it that smoothly.

When I was working on my private helicopter pilot rating. It took way to long for me to get confident at autorotation. I definitely didn't have a problem with powered run on landings.

I can remember watching the National Guard do full touchdown autos at Capital City airport in Lansing.
Sparks were always flying.

Definitely a real auto rotation and well done 😉👍

Heard the helicopters have to be certified for autorotation. I always wondered who actually does that certification lol.

That auto.rotation soumds just as loud as if the turbine is running...❤

I love when I heard the piolet crank that collective pitch.

Hueys have excellent auto capabilities. This big blades have a lot of inertial.

I just learned that this was possible maybe a couple of weeks ago. As little as I know about physics, it makes sense the falling of the helicopter would create wind thrust I don't know if that's the correct word, but that would spin the blades, slowing it down allowing you to land but it's so damn cool😊

Does it really count as autorotation when you cut power five feet above ground?

A stronger flare would result in a vertical landing vs a run on.

I could not imagine how Nam was. Tons of talented pilots in that era for sure.

That was one sweet autorotation right there❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥!!! Absolute perfect👍🏻
