Customers often think that zircon is a fake or man made gemstone. Steve Moriarty explains a common misconception between natural zircon and cubic zirconia. Cubic zirconia is a fake or simulated, lab created gem, while zircon is a naturally forming gem that is mined from the earth.

I think the toughest thing for the untrained eye, is how to tell the difference between them... by them I mean all 3! Diamonds, Zircon and Zirconia.
The only thing I was ever told, was to look for clear, no rainbow colors. But, that sometimes can be tricky as well. Some Zirconia/Zircon are so clean and crisp, can really tell.

Hello I'm interested in buying some natural zircon. But I cant find any information on how they test with a gem tester. Do the mined zircon hit with a tester? Or with cubic zirconia not test? Just would like real stones and seems very hard in the market. To get real gem stones and not all the fake czs or glass stuff. Just getting back into the jewlery seen. And learning about moissanite and zircon. Very interesting stones to me. Besides the typical and expensive diamonds. Just found out that my wife's supposed to be authentic diamond tennis bracelet. I bought at a big retail store. And labeled real diamonds was not the case. Was very mad learn this but was bought years ago. So not much can be done now. So trying to be a bit smarter going forward. My mum left me a tennis bracelet. I knew not diamonds because no way could my dad have afforded but my dad only bought natural gems as far as I know which is where I get it from. I took the bracelet into a High St jewellers and asked them to test whether Zircon or CZ. To be honest, I do not think they knew what Zircon is. They came from the backroom of the shop and said not diamond is CZ. I questioned if natural and Zircon, they just said CZ. Would they have been able to tell using a diamond tester as that I am sure is all they did. I would rather it be a natural zircon than a diamond. Just dont want it to be lab created :(
