Dear Denis, as always: an awsome video, explaining the thing much better than I ever could. Thanks for taking the time and making such a great video!

Great demo!
You tuched base with all the questions i had with the product and you have a keen sence of trouble shooting that most people do not have.
The great thing with the ferro rod is that it can help to replenish the stock of charred material needed for a fire by compression (friction).
All the best my friend

Try charred cotton balls/wool. Proper lubrication and pressure is key. Charred Punk wood, polypore and Chaga works good too.

Very nice! I played around with making a homemade fire piston and it's not as easy to make as you might think. To get a good seal around the piston fitting into the chamber, I had to try a few times with different materials. It can be done but I think I'd rather just buy one if I decided to include it in my kit. One point of disagreement ... I definitely see friction fire methods as survival techniques. By their definition they are survival techniques in that you can use them in the wild if you lose everything. Mind you, it would be hard to assemble a bow drill or hand drill set with no knife if you had absolutely nothing but it is in theory possible. And if you have a knife it isn't all that hard. You can't find ferro rods or lighters or matches in nature so they aren't truly survival methods. At the end of the day we all hope never to be put in a true survival situation and that we have our ferro rods and the rest of our kit as we enjoy the outdoors.

Wonderful review and demo Denis. I've never really been a fan of fire pistons. They always seemed - to me anyways - to be a little too gimmicky and finicky. That being said, this is the best one I've seen thanks to your attention to detail, and your understanding of what the experienced bushcraft type person would be looking for.. Always great to hear from you as well my friend.. :-)

i have the exact same fire piston and its really hard to use. Dont use excess lube, make sure the tinder holder is clean of lube, and yes, use small pieces of tinder

This is not the easiest way to start a fire, but it is one of the oldest and does not replace a Bic or rod, but a bow drill. I love them for their longevity, they have survived, reached, grabbed the hearts of many like the bow and arrow. We don't love them because they are easy but because they are hard, traditional, connected the the past. As far as the weakness, o rings, buy a bunch, they are cheap.

I have the same thing with the head, thanks for your video, I saw that thing a while ago and bought it and wanted to try it out.
It didn't work and I thought I did probably something wrong but did not now what and rather than wasting my at the moment limited supply of charcloth I searched for a video.
Seems I used way more charcloth than suposed.
I'll try it again with less :-)

Looks like a nice toy. I have found the fire piston to be difficult to get an ember. As far as the cap coming unscrewed after 3-4 times, you may want to try a drop or two, of Loctite on the threads (or a dab of finger nail polish), to keep it tightened.

Have you tried or compared the NuMyth Vulcan ? I am just looking in to these devices out of curiosity (might purchase one at some point) and am interested to know how you think they compare.

The BE and Numyth Vulcan are the best options for a fire piston, that said the Wilderness Solutions are also good. I disagree that a fire piston is not a survival tool unless you don't know how to use one. I can't imagine a more bullet proof fire method, these have been used for thousands of years.

I use a small piece of Chaga in mine, I find it smolders longer than char cloth.

You read my mind on the char cloth being that small and burning quickly. Good job on the vid. Why is most survival gear painted black? If you drop it at night you're going to have a heck of a time finding it, even with a flashlight.

I may purchase one of these but there are a couple of things that bother me. First, no lanyard hole, second, the back up rod makes this seem insecure. The Numyth Vulcan just seems more confident, and fit my search for a dedicated fire piston. That said, the BE Piston looks really high quality and I am sure it works well. It is the only one, in my opinion, that can compete with the Vulcan.

I was hoping to see you actually start a fire with it. Nice video other than that.
