What not to say in Türkiye 🇹🇷

If there’s one thing I learned on my travels it’s to shut up about certain things when travelling to certain countries 😂

Here’s what not to say in public when traveling in Türkiye:

Any comparison between Türkiye and Greece.
Both amazing countries, but they have somewhat of a troubled relationship 😅 Try to stay away from mentioning Greece in Türkiye and vice versa. Especially when it comes to food…

Istanbul is NOT the capital of Türkiye, it’s Ankara. Also, while you’re there, do yourself a favour and don’t call it Constantinople.

In Türkiye the official language is Turkish and the people are very proud of their language. Some communities (especially in the East) do speak other languages though such as: Kurdish, Zazaki, Laz, and also Arabic.

Döner kebab is a Turkish dish, which is obviously very popular in Germany due to immigration. While some variations were first invented in other countries, the original dish stays Turkish.

It’s TÜRKIYE, not TURKEY. In 2021 the country changed its spelling to disassociate from the bird. So to be respectful I would advise you to say Türkiye [TÜR-KEE-YEH].

Tea time is every time! Expect to drink tea after every meal in Türkiye. If you refuse your tea, you will be immediately banned from the country. 😂

Oh, you think being banned from the country is bad? Just wait and see what happens if you’re rude to cats…

No lol. In English we use English name, not some Turkiye with weird umlauts that nobody knows how to type. The Turks can call themselves anything they want, but in English language it's Turkey.
