Then a full back goes in attack, a midfielder as well, and it’s a 2-3-5

Also, pujol was more or less a libero. the same can be said about bonucci in juventus (guardiola, in fact tried hard to sign him a few years ago): the role never really died.

The stress in libero is on the first syllable

About half way through this, I stroked my chin and was ABOUT to say "libero". But I forgot the word, but then hearing it, made me remember it..
Anyway, I need to go to bed. I have work in about 8 hours.

This is exactly what it was called.
I was taught and groomed to be a libero back in the early 90's.
I was moved out of the 8/10 roles because of my stature and athleticism but also for my almost perfect reading of the game and anticipation.
I thrived in libero.
Libero and regista are my favourite positions.
I wish I was 20 again

I never knew Baressi to be a libero. My memories of him were this amazing sweeper delivering pin point accurate long passes, beautiful.

This was previously done by Sir Alex as well. Phil Jones off position used to get in Midfield. I remember this he did it against Real Madrid.

Been doing that at Liverpool for ages now with TAA moving into midfield and Konate stepping across.

It's a natural thing to do when you're a strong side. When my team is dominating, I myself as a CB either push laterally or turn myself a Libero

The old way to play italian football was to have the centerbacks in a vertical line and not in orizzontal one. The one that stayed forward was the "Libero" and the one behind was the stopper.

But also notice walker the RB playing high up at RW at times and even assisting in some goals.

I recall Matthias Sammer playing this type of role for the German national team - he was just amazing at it.

Center back Gambit : number 4 and 6 double position variation
Center forward Gambit : false 9 variation

Pochettino at Spurs pushed both of his fullbacks high and had a midfielder drop between the two center halves creating the same exact thing. It's essentially the same thing. Not only is this old he's not even the only one in recent history to do it.
