He had to tell someone he had an emergency. Sounds like this pilot did a very good job handling a serious emergency. Well done from a retire airline pilot!

He's calling a tower that actually has people in it rather than calling the automated lighting system at the other airport that might have ZERO people listening.

As a thirty year controller and forty year pilot DECLARE THE EMERGENCY!!! It lets the entire system quickly go to work for you. Many pilots mistakenly think there is some list or something they will get on to put them in a negative light. Others think you will be put under the full FAA microscope. Not so. Most emergencies that end well don’t even require a call to the FAA. They are resolved right on the frequencies. End of story. In an actual emergency, the ownership of the aircraft immediately transfers to the insurance company and your job is to use EVERYTHING at your disposal to get safely down.

Oorah - nicely done on describing "stuff" for non fliers. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. TSgt Joe (Ret.)

Thanks for explaining and for "going the extra mile" to find out and tell us, that all the passengers were safe.

The French "m'aidez" (meaning - help me) is pronounced the same as mayday.

ATC said, “Call me on the phone after you land safely”. Um, that’s kinda what I’m worried about🤷🏼‍♂️

Declare, just declare. The engine is the only thing keeping you flying and it's having issues. Declare and get priority. Live to fly another day.

Hi, just a couple quick notes/questions from an avid observer who has never actually flown an airplane:
1) It seems to me that, while MAY-DAY and PAN-PAN are standard ICAO phraseology, they are mostly used outside of the USA, whereas in the US most staff use "emergency"
2) I really think the pilot should have gone for a MAY-DAY call: losing the only one engine you have seems like a distress issue to me
3) The pilot declared PAN-PAN but then initially followed with "nothing declared" (talking about emergency) which I think confuse things even more
4) All of the above made for a very confusing communication

Can you please chime in, and tell me if I am misunderstanding or misinterpreting anything? Thanks, and keep up the good work!

The controller needs more training. Pilot: I have a emergency situation. ATC: "Call me when you get on the ground"

In UK, while training for PPL in the 80's, I had to complete a Practice Pan, pretending I was lost and asking for assistance to my destination. If my memory is correct, I had to tune to a particular national frequency, announce Practice Pan Pan Pan, They instructed me to adopt a 15° left turn and eventually located me on their system. They provided bearings for my destination.

I was a G A pilot for 11 years for fun. I worked in the marine industry ( building and electronics) for 55 years, plus I was in the Navy. I’m very familiar with both terms in an emergency.

An engine failure at 1, 200 is an emergency. Declare immediately and worry about paperwork later.

Obviously the pilot would report the "pan pan pan" to Ocala, since Marion doesn't have a tower. I'm surprised ATC questioned him on that.

A farm field landing with 60 gal of fuel on board a Mooney landing gear would have made me nervous. had an acquaintance who made a rough landing in a Mooney Just him on board not much fuel. landing gear punched right up through the wing.

Sounds like that pilot was losing his mind and panicking
