This video is one in a series of videos where we'll be looking at building static websites using the Hugo framework. The course is designed for intermediate web developers, and will introduce some of the core concepts of the framework in an easy to follow manner.

Throughout the course we'll be looking at various topics including content organization, templates, data files, conditionals, front matter and much more.

I'm a backend guy with some frontend experience from 15+ years ago and wanted to check out what's going on nowadays in the frontend area. This is really an excellent tutorial. I've watched the whole series. After that and a bit of playing around with HUGO I was able to build a static website and adapt a quite complex theme (docport) to my needs. 👍👍👍👍👍

Hey Mike, thanks a lot for these series, I was looking for this kind of resource!

I only wanted to point out that the way you explained the difference between static and dynamic websites is good, but not entirely precise.

Technically speaking, you can make your content change a lot in a static website, you have the full power of Javascript. What you can't do is run code in the server that is hosting the pages, but you can even make requests to other pages and render its results (you can even add comment sections to these static blogs with this trick).

I just wanted to leave this out here so new learners don't become confused (or disappointed!) with the capabilities of static websites.

Thanks again for the series!

Mike, that whole tutorial series is amazing !
Hugo is really powerful but the documentation lacks a lot when it comes to progressively introducing you into the concepts, which are not even that complicated (and that's the beauty of a well-designed piece of software)

Your videos were the pedagogic introduction I needed in order to get into it ; if it weren't for them I think I would have turned to another solution

Thanks a lot !

(I second the critics about the zoom-in effect and the use of meaningless dirnames/filenames, but that's really, really minor next to your teaching abilities)

Dude you're so underrated. Thank you sooo much for all the effort you put in those videos! Appreciate it, I wish you very best and you totally deserve it. Maybe consider putting those courses on udemy? I mean, you could earn some money and I bet your courses would be popular there. Cheers!

Thank you for this. I have been putting off learning Hugo even though I subscribed to other tutorial courses via paid courses site... and have been stuck in tutorial purgatory. I appreciate you.

just started messing w this the other day, pretty neat!! dumb ass question: do I have to stop the server every time I need to run a new command in the command line (windows10) ?

I can't type anything @ the command line after starting it :(

Is it possible to merge a site that uses hugo with wordpress? I would prefer going into the code, but I also have a user who prefers wordpress because it is user friendly. Basically what I mean is can a custom built site be merged with wordpress so that you can use wordpress to make blog posts?

"Baked" vs "Half-Baked" not "Static" vs "Dynamic"

the terms "Static" and "Dynamic" imply all the wrong, misleading sorts of thing (to me at least). Static suggests limp and feeble and difficult to get going. Dynamic suggests muscular and highly active, etc.

Baked sites are fully cooked and ready to devour when called on. Half-baked sites wait until the consumer is present before they fire up the oven for that final cooking session.

Hey Mike, Thanks for the efforts and details in the video tutorials.
Is Hugo still developing? The last release was in December 2021.

Hey Mike, you did tutorials on both Hugo and Jekyll. Which one is best on your perspective?

I don't think the series is very clear. I watched many videos and wasn't able to get anything to show.
What I was missing is that when you add a theme you need to look at the examples page to know how to configure your setup. So, watching the tutorial series you don't learn much quicker than just looking at the example that comes with the theme. It will get you going faster.
