Tucked away in a Cudahy warehouse something big has been pounding away since 1959. In fact, it's one of the biggest of its kind in the world.

“It’s loud. It’s smokey. It’s dirty. And it’s intimidating if you’ve never seen it before," Steven Panasuk said.

As a Wisconsinite I know we have a decent industry here for metal works but I never imagined a big ass power hammer.

My Grandfather worked with that hammer at Ladish in Cudahy WI. He lived two blocks away from Ladish. You can feel the ground shake with ever strike.

Got to see this Hammer in the 80's. Amazing piece of machinery! My grandfather worked there for 35 years and operated the cherry picker you see in the video taking the material out of the hammer.

That big bright yellow/orange block looks so soft I could just wrap my arms around it and give it a big hug!

What’s the difference between a garbanzo bean and a chickpea? I’ve never had a garbanzo bean on my face before.

My ex stepdad (I think that’s how I’d refer to him) works there. Once a piece of steel got stuck to the top and cooled, and when trying to get it unstuck, the hammer fell and that piece shattered like shrapnel, instantly killing then man working on it. Scary and powerful stuff

Facts about #85

It was originally in Germany however during WWII we took it. It was made to manufacture weapons. Instead of destroying it, we acquired it and still use it today.
When the ram cracked, a new one was made and had to be buried for a few years to cure before being shipped.

Built in 1959...and I'll bet we couldn't build an equivalent one today.
