68 - Sailing to Fiji with No Mainsail

Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable.

The time had come to finally say goodbye to Tonga (and all the humpback whales!) and set sail to Fiji. Just one problem... We couldn't use our mainsail! We've mentioned it in prior videos, but we lost the battens overboard during a storm in Neiafu after I didn't lash them down properly when the mainsail was off getting repaired. Not one of my better moments, that's for sure.

So instead, we found a weather window with plenty of wind and sailed using only our headsails. This worked out better than I expected as it took us less than 3 days to sail the 421nm into Savu Savu. Plus we managed our 3rd spinnaker flight in a row! It barely counts as successful, but without any additional rips, I'll take it!

Loved the video as always, but I’m confused. David said the bad luck was returning - what happened? It all looked pretty good to me! (Was it those nefarious fish?)

Thank you for properly flying the ensign. You are one of the very few who do. It grinds my teeth that so many either do not know or do not care to know. Sometimes it can quite confusing. I've even seen the Q flag flown where one expects the ensign.

No stock of fishing supplies? Tsk tsk Shaking my head here.

If you're not getting bites it may because the boat is putting stray voltage in the water. Species dependent, a certain mA is okay, Salmon for example seem to prefer 7 mA.

Backing or veering winds always suggest more than a minor change in the weather.

Somewhere between HI and AK there were two adult Sperm whales fully broaching just off the bow. I always have cameras at the ready but this time I was in the midst of cleaning my main camera so didn't bother to reach for it. I simply enjoyed the show. Indelible memories.

Flying fish are good cooked up as a side with eggs. Or, use as a lure.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a furling spinnaker. What is/are the reason(s) for your bad luck with setting the chute?

Too bad the whales are sneaky little buggers cause they are so magnificent to see breaching and romping around. We went to Maui one whale season and it was amazing since they were everywhere.

great video, how would you say the boat sails different without the main up? It seems like you still made good speeds. Was stability or boat movement different? keep up the good work!

Witch size of gaz tank do you have? How long do you stay without refill them?
