Cutaneous Lupus - Yale Medicine Explains

People with autoimmune diseases often face a complicated journey to diagnosis and treatment. Those whose skin is affected face the additional stigma of having symptoms that are visible to everyone they meet. Doctors in Yale Medicine's dermatology and rheumatology departments work closely together to help people with autoimmune diseases such as lupus and scleroderma look and feel as good as possible. They not only provide warm, personal patient care, but also participate in research to advance treatment of skin conditions associated with autoimmune diseases for people all around the world. Autoimmune diseases tend to bring complicated symptoms. Many people with these conditions see doctors in several medical specialties. Lupus and scleroderma are two that primarily affect the skin, requiring dermatology care. But these diseases may also affect connective tissues, which are treated by a rheumatologist. “At Yale Medicine, we aim for an interdisciplinary approach for patients who may require the expertise of multiple specialists,” says Sarika Manoj Ramachandran, MD, a Yale Medicine dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine.

Thank you for the information. It was very helpful. I actually sent a link to my dermatologist. I have lupus and suffering from hair loss. Just beginning my scalp treatments and will soon be getting injections. The only problem I keep running into is finding a dermatologist who is familiar with dealing with African American skin and hair type/texture. This is where many dermatologist I feel are lacking in knowledge beyond what they learn in medical school. It would be helpful to partner with a skilled cosmetologist as a consult to assist in the proper hair/scalp regime that would be a benefit in dealing with patients with my hair type.

I have cutaneous lupus.... it (so far) only affects my arms. The itching is beyond bearable. I'm on medication (Hydroxychloroquine), a steroid ointment and still I itch. The more I scratch, the itchier it gets. For me, the ONLY relief is an ice pack. My skin has toughened up so much from scratching I can put the ice pack directly on my skin. I'm 65 - the itch started 4 years ago.... I wasn't diagnosed until last year.
I'm surprised this woman didn't mention the itching. If my dermatologist doesn't find something to help get this torture under control I don't know how I'm going to survive.

Anti malarial drugs didn’t work for me. Had severe urticaria. I’m using spf 50 products. I’m suffering with scarring on the scalp. Loosing too much hairs especially on the hair line. What do you think I should do best?

Hi guys, after meeting my doctor and he confirmed that I had Urticaria, I was so scared that it shouldn't hurt my family. I made all provisions to cure myself when I found out the drugs were not working. But to no avail. Until doctor Iyhere on youtube made everything possible.
