Every April, in Zambia, the Makishi demons come to take away young boys. This event celebrates the beginning of the initiation from adolescence to manhood.
In the village of Kashushu, this Mukanda ceremony is 500 years old and has been passed down orally for generations. Patrick, the main organizer this year, has to raise money for costumes, food and for the 4 months of initiation.
But the celebration is so expensive that Patrick struggles to meet both ends. He fears for the future of the Mukanda, and without the help of an organization like UNESCO, it will certainly disappear.

My continent is full of so many beautiful and amazing things but the west will only show malnutritioned children from my beautiful mamma Africa.. These are documentaries that should be shown in the world.. Not an unhappy, unhealthy, poor children... We are the richest continent in the world.. With beauty and culture and free happiness

The young man asking grandma to bring back girls the following day and her saying there isn’t enough for them all, hilarious. Also, the boys rinsing/splashing one another during their first bath seemed like a fun break. Beautiful doc!

My beautiful country/people 😍 ♥ 🇿🇲 🇿🇲!!
I remember being excited and scared in equal measure when we were kids, and got chased by one of these masked dancers. Beautiful memories 💖 ❤

What a Fantastic experience. Seriously, thank you . Wonderful Doco on another Culture. Almost like going on a holiday, when we cant. One day maybe . The paintwork on the men, so like our Aboriginal First Nation. 60 Thousand years and counting. ...

This is absolutely beautiful. I get sad sometimes thinking about the culture stolen from us descendants of enslaved men and women.Long Live our Knowledgeable Elders and our strong, resourceful, soulful ancestors 🔥❤️❤️

I have a lot of respect for the father of 5. He’s following the traditions even tho he has to separate his heard but he’s seeking out change so the traditions can stay. He’s a good man.

I come from the nyemba tribe from Angola🇦🇴, our ancestors have lived with the Valuvale closely, these people are our close neighbors even are languages are similar..Even the names of the different makishi and the mukanda ritual is similar…However, the identities of the makishi remains a mystery…growing up I was chased by one of them it’s exhilarating!

I’m from the Sotho tribe in SA 🇿🇦, we have a very similar practice but it is very sacred and details aren’t known to those who haven’t been there. Shocking that I can even fully understand the language spoken here. So similar 🌹

Slice, you're the best! I wish you could come over to my community, Dema-Abbey in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, South-South Nigeria and document some of our reach cultural items, especially the Oke-Ekpe masquerade festival which takes place every 5th day of January each year. The annual masquerade and dance festival is gradually going extinct as a result of the influence of Pentecostal (evangelical) Christianity and urgently needs to be documented for future generations. It'll be an honour and add to your rich trove of treasured cultural items... I truly enjoyed this.
