“Developing an understanding of the world’s fastest (non-ballistic) projectile”

Feather shuttlecocks are unique in structure, mass (5~6 g), and operational
velocity. The shuttlecock is recognised as the fastest non ballistic sports projectile (WR 137 m/s), but also exhibits the largest inflight deceleration. The sport is popular both globally and within the UK, however the playability of the sport is directly linked to the playing environment. Shuttlecocks are highly susceptible to air movement, and the development of a shuttlecock capable of use in an outdoor environment has long been of interest to the badminton community to enhance participation. This session provides updates on work aimed to meet that goal.
