Shipwreck of WW2 Landing Craft - Leros / Ναυάγιο Αποβατικού Σκάφους Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου - Λέρος

Leros is not justifiably considered the "mecca of shipwrecks" due to the numerous shipwrecks from World War II hidden on its seabed. What in previous decades was a secret among the residents of the island has now attracted the international interest of those involved in diving. As a result of the international interest, a German Junker aircraft was recovered in 2003 and is now on display at the Air Force Museum in Athens. Also today, diving trips on the island are organised by local divers, but an easily accessible shipwreck at a depth of only 2 to 3 metres can be found in the area of Koulouki (Κουλούκι) in Lakki, specifically on the beach of the Naftikos Omilos Lerou (Ναυτικός Όμιλος Λέρου). At a distance of a few metres from the coast (you can also see it on Google Maps) and with a simple sea mask, anyone can visit the wreck of a small German landing craft, which was used and probably destroyed during the landing of the Germans on the island.

Η Λέρος δεν θεωρείται άδικα η «μέκκα των ναυαγίων» λόγω των πολυάριθμων ναυαγίων από τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο που κρύβονται στον βυθό της. Αυτό που τις προηγούμενες δεκαετίες αποτελούσε μυστικό μεταξύ των κατοίκων του νησιού έχει πλέον προσελκύσει το διεθνές ενδιαφέρον όσων ασχολούνται με τις καταδύσεις. Ως αποτέλεσμα του διεθνούς ενδιαφέροντος, ένα γερμανικό αεροσκάφος Junker ανελκύθηκε το 2003 και τώρα εκτίθεται στο Μουσείο Πολεμικής Αεροπορίας στην Αθήνα. Σήμερα, ντόπιοι δύτες οργανώνουν καταδυτικές εκδρομές στο νησί, αλλά ένα εύκολα προσβάσιμο ναυάγιο σε βάθος μόλις 2 έως 3 μέτρων βρίσκεται στην περιοχή Κουλούκι στο Λακκί και συγκεκριμένα στην παραλία του Ναυτικού Ομίλου Λέρου. Σε απόσταση λίγων μέτρων από την ακτή (μπορείτε να το δείτε επίσης και στους χάρτες Google) και με μια απλή μάσκα θαλάσσης, ο καθένας μπορεί να επισκεφτεί το ναυάγιο ενός μικρού γερμανικού σκάφους , που χρησιμοποιήθηκε και πιθανότατα καταστράφηκε κατά την απόβαση των Γερμανών στο νησί.
