"I am an illustrator of children’s books for over eight years. At the beginning of my career I have been learning a lot and feeling the impetus of my development with each new project. Now my style and illustrative tasks are really at a higher level.

But I still feel stagnant. Lately I’ve been focusing on character development. I love stylized characters and funny stories, try to draw in this way, emphasize humor and subtext in their pictures, but all this does not look particularly convincing.

I really need criticism from my work to draw better. I want to illustrate books for children 6-10 years old and do it brilliantly."

Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

I love watching old critics on art prof...
And I miss Alex. His voice alone. Hope he is doing well with his new career.
But ones an artist...always an artist! When you have learned to see the world in a special way you don't loose that.
...and the whimsical style of the artist critiqued I hope to see in books soon. I love kid's books. I wish my own skills would be so remarkable.
