So amazing to see a stock Volkswagen Corrado G60. I'm sure by now this one has been motor swapped and is doing burnouts out an unsanctioned car gathering near you.

It's a shame you don't see too many Sciroccos or Corrados anymore. Both were sharp, sporty, and fun to drive!!!!

This car has aged, very well. It’s a shame that we never got the Scirocco, or a remake, of this.

This was my first new car. Same color and everything. I had some great times in that car. To this day it's still the biggest personal check I've ever written. I paid $16, 686.50 for my Corrado. I'll never forget writing that check.

I remember watching this episode when it originally aired. I said to myself, I'll own one of them some day! 1.5 years later I bought a slightly used yellow '90 g60 w/ 27k miles. I still own it today, and still enjoy it, w/ 101k miles. I drove it daily for 10 years. Mine was and is very reliable (unlike others), but I did rebuild my supercharger twice to be safe, and change the oil frequently. Many died due to people over boosting them and NOT changing the oil; which will kill those superchargers. The build quality was on par w/ a 944 at that time. Mine had no squeaks or rattles, and still doesn't. Unfortunately, the high price (for the time) is what did it in. Vw probably should have also offered it in the 2.0 16v version for less money; that might have helped sales; since Americans love options and prestige without the higher price. Also, people seem to forget thst there was a recession going on in 1990 as well. I graduated from design school in 90 and thankfully got a job soon after; many others were not so lucky.

I miss the days when most cars had great visibility.

I had a 91 with the supercharger swapped to the lysholm supercharger, now that one screamed like a firetruck siren. Old ladies would pull over thinking you were an emergency vehicle, my future wife got a ticket for impersonating one while driving it. I remember being asked in 2004 if it was a new electric VW! Unfortunately in 2005 a Dodge Neon SRT4 decided to ram me off the road and into a telephone pole to furture examine this interesting car. I later got a VR6 Corrado but it wasn't the same as my tuned g60. I kept the motor and now after all these years have it installed in a 1991 VW cabby, I hope to re-live my youth with it, share it with my kids, and avoid Neons and telephone poles.

This was ahead of its time! Active aero on a relatively cheap car from 1990?!

Wow, I can't believe that it's been over 30 years ago since this car was introduced it's kinda hard to wrap my brain around 1990 being 30 years ago damn I feel old.😂

60-0 braking of 113 feet is *REALLY* good for 1990 !

I was lucky enough to ride in one of these brand new back in 1993. I distinctly remember commenting on what a bone shattering ride it had and the owner replied with attitude "Some people like a firm ride."

Of course the thing John gets most animated about is that the oil pressure gauge and voltmeter are coming soon 😂

I can tell you from personal experience, the spoiler really is effective. When I lived in Germany, I had my first Corrado G60 carefully tuned for more power at TEC. Top speed rose from around 150 mph to around 160. Shortly after the tuning, I had a subwoofer installed. Unfortunately, the installer cut the cable for the speed-compensated volume. I'd just got on the autobahn and had only reached around 150mph on the way to Frankfurt. The back end felt really light. Couldn't see the spoiler in the rear view mirror. Fortunately, the override switch at bottom left still functioned, so I was able to reach Frankfurt on time! I later spliced the cable myself and full functionality was restored. Yes, the same cable that controls speed-compensated volume also sends the signal for the spoiler.

There must be a VW enthusiast on the MotorWeek staff, with the reference to H2Oi in the description. And it's amazing how cheap cars have gotten now. This Corrado was $17k in 1990, while my 2018 Jetta which is almost equally fast and powerful (but gets 38 MPG!) also cost me around $17k, despite 28 years of inflation between them.

I always look forward to these retro reviews. The brand new stuff is good and all, but looking back to cars from when I was a kid, that pulls right at the nostalgia strings.
