My son played this song for me a couple of years before he was killed in a car wreck. This song has special meaning for me and I cry every time I hear it. Thank you for doing a reaction on this song.

The meaning of the song is a parent telling a son to be a “simple” man, not live lavishly or have a complicated life. Pay the bills put food on the table for your family, etc and you will be “satisfied”

Ronnie Van Zant had an amazing voice. The band just wrote music that touched your soul. We just lost Gary Rossington the last living member of the band. RIP Gary.

You young men impress me and I'm thankful for you. I'm 71 and really appreciate how you appreciate our music.

I have to say that you young gentleman put a smile on this old lady’s face. To see you enjoying music for what it is no matter the genre is uplifting. This is how I’ve viewed music all my life. From folk music to metal, alternative to rap. I love It all! Music is what feeds your soul. These days I enjoy praise and worship but I’ll dance to anything that moves me!

Lynyrd Skynyrd is absolute "Gold Standard of Southern Rock". A genre where you have slow, melody focused sections, combined with "heavy" guitar sections and often having a story or message in the lyrics, and normally combining a "build up" of music and lyrics for hitting key points to get across. They may have been one of the most influential bands for roughly 30 years (80's-2000's) but have been slowly replaced by later bands for modern times as the "influence" type of bands.

Now, as far as the whole "Linken Park/Motely Crue" issue? I get it, they both have some good songs and have also been wildly popular over the years for one group or another. But I know that as soon as Metallica gets tossed in that mix, Park and Crue will be left in the dust, especially when you consider the song structures of Metallica that can change directions literally from one verse to the other off of one note.

Vocally? Well, vocals are all subjective and you can never really say that one singer is "perfect" for everyone. But there are some who are clearly "better" than others, but don't limit yourself to only male singers. The Wilson sisters (Ann/Nancy) from Heart are considered to be the best female vocalist in Rock-N-Roll, and their vocal range and ability still shocks new listeners to this day.

This song was written through a grieving process when band members lost a grandmother and mother at around same time. This song is an amalgam of the advice these two influential women had. It transcends the personal and becomes something everyone can relate to . . .

I`m 64 now. Back in 1974, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the very first band I saw in concert. In New Orleans. I was 16 yrs. old.

I have to add this. The second time through I started laughing. I was remembering all the time listening to this, the concerts, the cellars, the parties, kegs, etc, but I never imagined 45 years later a bunch of young black men would be enjoying it so much. You guys are as much of a treasure as the music. In fact, you joined a life time of Lynyrd Skynyrd memories. Thanks again.

I freaking enjoy the hell out you young men discovering the southern fried rock mastery that is Lynyrd Skynyrd! Next on your Skynyrd list should be The Ballad of Curtis Loew. You will DIG IT!

My parents had tickets to the Baton Rouge show when the plane crashed and we lost some very talented musicians that day. God bless all the people this song speaks to… it has special meaning to so many people out there. Appreciate y’all doing Skynrd.

Love this song. Shinedown's cover is excellent. Played this for my son when he was 16. Told him I always said I would play this for any son I was blessed with, because that's what I want for him. He found the Shinedown cover for me. Said if he ever had a son he would share the song with him.
Yesterday his son turned 6 months, so still has a while to go. He is a good hard working, husband and Father. He takes after his Dad. I'm so proud of him. A wonderful son.

I sang this to my son a thousand times. He liked it much better when he was little but I didn't stop. As a surprise at his wedding he played it for the mother son dance. I was crying by the 4th note and never prouder of him. He is happy and satisfied nothing more I could ask for.

(R.I.P.) Ronnie Van Zant. One of a kind. Never wrote down a lyric: "If I need to write it down, it ain't no good" RVZ. This song is a masterpiece maybe even more than Freebird for me. It's a perfect song.

Grew up listening to them. Always played this for my son when he was growing up. Great message for young men. You don't have to be wealthy money wise it's about you as a man being happy with yourself and your life. That's what makes you wealthy.

Hell yea This my favorite track all time. Always will love Lynyrd Skynyrd. What his mama told him was some sound advice. And she made sure to remind him “don’t forget son, there is someone up above”.

I grew up down the road from these guys. Ronnie Van Zant never wrote down a lyric. He wrote the songs in his head and remembered them all. True story.
