I love love love when you do reviews like this. They're so articulate and sentimental and just the right blend of personal experience and critical reading experience. Can't wait for your next review.

Another great video! What is your secret? Weeks of script editing? Catchy metaphores? Can you teach me your ways? Also i feel your pain with IT issues.

Speaking of anthologies ... I recently had a piece published in an anthology on writing about food. Now that makes me biased, but I was genuinely surprised by the how good it is. Sustenance by Vancouver’s poet laureate (Rachel Rose).

Thank you for bringing this anthology to my attention! Great you gave so much info about it and good to hear your personal response. I just talked about Chee's debut novel in my most recent video and I'm really looking forward to his upcoming essay collection as well. In the mean time I'll try to get a copy of this - I loved Buchanan's Harmless Like You so much.
Often poetry is hit and miss with me too, but I sort of like it when anthologies slip poetry in because it challenges me to read more of it. Usually I find that poetry is more likely to strike a chord with me if a poem has a political slant.

This sounds so interesting and I'm putting it on my TBR. I love to see Korean and other Asian cultures being talked about. My boyfriend is Korean so I hear the language a lot at home and I seem to be always learning more about the culture. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

This anthology sounds so interesting... my husband is Korean/Chinese and my daughter has started to read more authors that represent her. The Queen of the Night is on her pile - but the size is daunting for a junior in college. This will be perfect.

Oh wow. It's amazing that these anthologies exist! There are indeed two completely different worldviews at home and outside the home when you're Asian. Some of the stereotypes are true and some are not but these kinds of stories can be both heartbreaking and hilarious. I love listening to stand up comedians chat about this kind of thing, but I've never read books that really capture it. Ooh, new books for the TBR!

My brain acts like a squirrel sometimes, which always surprises me when I do seem to focus on your videos without the urge to do something else while listening.

But boy... My TBR always grow after your reviews.. In the best way!

Thanks for the review and great video.

Thank you for bringing this one to my attention, I'm always a little o defense with anthologies mostly due to the chances of there being more forgettable stuff than new findings worth exploring but from your review, it seems there are more winners in this one.
Would you consider making a recommendation video on Asian authors (or partial Asian) who you really liked? It would be lovely to have a video like that to turn to when looking for a next read.

This sounds so good, I love a good anthology to give you a taster of a bunch of different authors all at once. I’m currently reading one called All the Women in my Family Sing” which is also excellent.

Wonderful review! I’m curious if you have read Buchanan’s Harmless Like You – according to Goodreads, you have not. Aside from one flaw, I loved it deeply, and cannot wait for her next one! I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this anthology, but you have completely sold me on it. You’ve also encouraged me to pull the Chang Rae Lee novel off my shelf – Aloft -and finally try it!

One last question, have you read The Loved Ones by Sonya Chung? Again, not a perfect novel, but quite stunning, by a Korean-American novelist about Korean-Americans and African-Americans – a 2016 novel that definitely was under the radar. I’d be so curious to hear what you thought of it if you ever get to it.
