"WHY AM I SO BAD AT KNOWING WHO THE GOOD GUYS ARE?!"
- Wim (I think that's the quote)

A couple of my coworkers were once talking about Game of Thrones, and they both said that they hated John Snow and actively wanted him to die just because he was actually a good person. They went on to say that any "good" character in a show should die because they're boring. And that shocked me to my core, hearing them say such things. Just because someone is good and does what is morally right doesn't mean they're automatically uninteresting to watch. Plenty of stories out there have proved just the opposite. I agree that many creators in Hollywood today believe that morally good people are boring, and it's because there are people out there in the audience who feel the same way. It's not my favorite part of our reality.

Who rewrites history to make the bad guys look better? The bad guys.

For me the one thing i need from star wars is coherent writing. I know its a pipe dream but i still dream.

One correction: game of thrones isn't "everyone is grey".
Characters like Eddard Stark and John Snow are genuinely good people... They're not flawless, but definitely not fmawed in an evil way, at all imo. Which is why they get themselves killed.

Similarly you could tell a story how the Jedi's compassion ultimately becomes their downfall or how trying doing the right thing will get them killed eventually...

These kids from skeleton crew... These kids are the future of star wars. Disney needs a young raw trilogy. They represent the hopeful optimism of young Luke Skywalker. Back to their roots. After Kennedy has been fired obvs.

Part of the appeal of Andor for me is actually the greyness of "good" and "evil".

For example, Syril is definitely one of the "bad guys" and he works for the Empire/its Corporate Vassal, but he seems to be a good person. He sees the murder of two employees of his company by a criminal and tries to bring their killer to justice. He just happens to have grown up in and work for a corrupt governing body.

This isn't so dissimilar to how our real world desensitizes us to the exploitation and manipulation of workers who just want to do honest work. Good people can be deceived by propaganda and fall victim to "just doing their job".

While the Empire is 1000% the bad guys, Andor does a wonderful job showing that well intentioned people work for corrupt organizations and that greedy/shady people can work for noble causes (i.e. Skeen).

Andor is my favourite piece of Star Wars media not because it gives us a clear picture of who the villains are, but because it illustrates how easy it is for ANY of us to focus on our narrow perspective and have our honest efforts twisted by the institutions we participate in.

I think that the way to think of Star Wars is as Tolkien defined the project of his mythology: to create a modern epic myth. And yes, the struggle of good vs evil is absolutely at the heart of it. The Acolyte set out to piss on all existing SW and make it into something else; for those who like that something else, you do you, but there’s a reason why most SW fans turned away from it with deep disdain.

None of us are perfect, we’ve all made decisions that we regret, have hurt others, or ourselves. But we don’t stay there. We get up and do the next right thing. The selfish thing is what led to our failures, guilt and shame in the first place. And a selfish person with no guilt, shame, regrets have really lost their way and need help from someone who does care for others, whether they ‘deserve it’ or not.

It just occured to me, BoBF should have been the nihilistic story, no one wanted Boba to be a good guy we all wanted to just see how ruthless he would be in the pursuit of power. Acolyte should have been a cautionary tale or a tale about how the good guys dont always win or get it right, instead it was just nihilistic. I actually think, had a better writer been involved, Acolyte could have been a creepy psychological horror or something.

Family is the thing for me. All the best Star Wars has a family drama at its core. Luke/Vader, Din/Grogu, The Ghost and The Mantis crews, etc.

Morality shall be a core of a Star Wars story.
The one who wants to condemn it, is an evil person themselves.

The last shot of Jod in Skeleton Crew looking out the window evaluating his conundrum... Seeing the pirate ship and his old life go down in flames, defeated by what he calls 'pinpricks of light' in the galaxy ; brilliant.

They did the same thing with The Rings of Power and Trek as well. It’s become a huge part of their playbook and gives you a pretty insightful look into their morality.

The fanbase really needed Skeleton Crew at this time.
Great show with heart, creativity, wonder and hope. Some great acting too.

Leslie Headland has stated she Identifizes with the Dark Side. Can't say I expected anything more from Harvey Weinstein's personal assistant.

Needs to have the hero’s journey …the sequels were missing that because Rey was a Mary Sue, not to mention, they made the story up as they were going along with no story prepared, literally not even knowing who the bad guy was until the last minute.

I don't think it's entirely true that It has to be clear and simple: You are evil, and I am good. I absolutely hate acolyte, but moral ambiguity has been done right in the KOTOR series and SWTOR. The problem with the Acolyte is that werent applied any logic of the characters choices.

davidfreddie

Moral ambiguity comes from good people doing bad things out of necessity or desperation but they still know it is bad or regretable... or maybe they even fail to do so because they cant make the tough call. The Acolyte sais straight its not worth to do the right thing as the good guys dont give af either and thats basically the antithesis of all Yoda taught us in "The Empire Strikes Back"
