Side Part Hairstyle Tutorial | Classic Men's Side Part | How I Style My Hair

I have worn a classic side part hairstyle and haircut for about seven years now. Although the fade requires a great barber and regular maintenance, the actual hairstyle itself is very easy to do. In this video, I walk you through my process for the classic side part hairstyle.

If you've followed the channel (or HSS website or Instagram) for a while now, you've no doubt noticed that I have a pretty classic and moderately conservative approach to my personal style. And that is definitely one of the reasons that I love the side part hairstyle.

As I sit here typing this, I'm looking around the studio at some of the photos we have on the wall. Clark Gable. Cary Grant. Fred Astaire. William Powell. All classic Hollywood leading me. All wore a side part hairstyle. (Well, to be fair, William Powell's part was more towards the center at times, but often off to the side...)

My point is, although the side part hairstyle may have come back into mens' consciences a little over a decade ago--thanks, Mad Men!--it has remained one of the most classic gentleman's haircuts and hairstyle for quite a long time.

Hello. 1. Like the marble back/wall splash in the shower: hexes and rectangles.
2. Is that a real tortoiseshell comb? If it is does it make a difference?
3. How often do you go to the hair salon?
4. Curious why you don't have slightly longer hair. It would tend to compliment your European / East Coast clothing aesthetic.
Thanks as always for the great content.
Cheers!

Hey Brian. Great video. I've been using a pomade for about the last 10 years and it's been working quite well. It's nice to see my contemporaries are going down the same road as I. Have a great week ahead.

Scrolled through some of your older videos, your skin has "glowed up" as they say. Also your voice would be great for reading books.

I switched to this style just a few weeks ago. I like how simple it is and stays in place all day. That’s what was annoying me with my former hairstyle (side part, but different side).

It helps a lot to grow your top hair for several weeks to add some volume. So if you change your hairstyle to this, take a few weeks anf be patient.

Thanks for the great video! I too have a cowlick in the right back "corner" of my hair and I wondered, what treatment do you suggest length-wise? Should I keep it cut real short or is it better to wait until the cowlick is long enough to blend in with the rest?

Brylcreem will also cook your scalp in the summer, like a cooking oil. I have the same hairstyle and a couple years ago my barber used it right before I went to the pool.

If you think Layrite or Imperial is nice, you'll be blown away by the products from Shear Revival, O'douds, Arcadian and Lockharts Authentic. If you're going to try one unorthodox waterbase, check out Shear Revival's Crystal Lake or Arcadian's Clay Pomade. Great pomades.

This might sound silly and cheap, but I use a small portion of body lotion (the cheap brand like Suave, I’ve tried the higher end lotions but they just won’t do). It’s worked great for years, it gives it a natural look and it holds pretty much all day.

Cool!
Can you tell me if you wash (with shampoo) your hair daily?

I alternate between the Layrite Original Pomade and Superhold Pomade depending on length. If the front gets too long I have a Superman curl that takes more than the Original to tame.
