'Come to Russia for turnips': Putin mocks western vegetable shortage

Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, suggested the UK and other European countries should go to Russia for vegetables amid a food security and cost of living crisis.

There was a note of schadenfreude in Putin's voice as he gleeful touted the resilience of the Russian food sector. 'Foreign analysts predicted us a depression and a decline in the consumer sector, they promised empty store shelves, a massive shortage of goods, and the failure of the service sector,' said Putin.

Addressing the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Putin said western countries were facing the challenges many thought Russia would, and suggested European countries turn to Russia to tackle those challenges. He said: 'Turnip is a good product but they would also probably have to go for turnips to Russia, because our level of the harvest, after all, significantly exceeds those figures of our neighbours in Europe.'

Umm.. I purchased fresh produce this morning. The store was packed with fresh foods. It's a common grocery with prices similar to 14-18 months ago.

Apparently the turnip is a bitter tasting root vegetable that can provide you with plenty of roughage. It can cause flatulence though. Enough said.

Is this vegetable shortage from the same sources that said we were all freezing in the winter?
Funniest one was a vox pop in August where a Russian said the west was freezing to a heatwave.

As far as I'm aware there is no vegetable shortage in the U.S. ... Prices went up a lot due to inflation, but the stores are still mostly packed with the same products. I travel between the U.S. and Mexico a lot, Mexican big chain stores like OXXO and Soriana also have every product as they did before, but at a roughly 6-10% higher price. Is he talking about mostly African countries with the shortage?
