As an Australian we did the same thing 25 years ago. Since then we have had zero mass shooting events. All of our crime rates went down including gun crime, gun murder/assault and so on. The only thing that has gone up statistically is confidence in public safety and the reality of public safety. Best thing we ever did 👍🏽

She’s 100% right. The US doesn’t have the courage or desire to fix the problem. Australia did much the same with good results.

As an Aussie, it’s our sworn duty to put down NZ as the weird step-cousin nation that they are and take their actors and claim they’re Australian.
But Jacinda is off limits. She is the standard by which all world leaders should look up to and I’d be proud to have her as my leader.

I grew up in NZ and moved to America six years ago. My mother came to visit me and she nearly had a panic attack when we were having lunch because two cops walked in with visible guns on them. In NZ, you don't even really see the police with guns. It's been a culture shock, for sure.

As an American who was there for Columbine and has lived in New Zealand for the last 17 years... ...can't say enough about Jacinda Ardern and the incredible job she has done here in NZ. It's very refreshing how things work here. Things get DONE!

I am a New Zealander 🇳🇿 we don't have corrupt pale stale male politicians sending piss weak prayers and thoughts ... we have a young mother who gets the job done ... America you need to vote like your children's lives depend on your vote

As an Australian, it is my duty to heap scorn and insults upon New Zealand like the slightly slow younger sibling that they are.

Ah hell, I can't. I have nothing bad at all to say about Jacinda Ardern, I think she's a treasure, a strong and vibrant leader that Kiwis can be proud of. We're taking our first overseas trip in 3 years in January, another cruise to New Zealand from Australia, and I can't wait. Gorgeous country and wonderful people, even if they talk kinda funny.

It's absolutely baffling to me that American's just can't wrap their heads around doing what is best for their people in the long run. Almost like trying to have a conversation with a bunch of toddlers.

OMG does the world need more normal women in positions of power !! Jacinda Ardern is wonderful in the fact that she is so down to earth and natural. Honest, empathetic, observant and smart. Everything that the American GOP party is NOT currently....

As an Australian I feel so proud of Jacinda and NZ…I’m so grateful we took the action against gun control after the Port Arthur tragedy in 1996. …my thoughts are with the victims and families of the latest shooting..another tragedy that should never ever have happened.

My mate's son and his partner were lucky enough to land a gig surveying the ecology of a small NZ island. Population a couple of thousand. Two years. They loved it. 18 months in Covid hit and they got an extension and stayed put. Now they have applied for nationality and are looking to build a house on the island.

The mosque shooter got his guns from a source outside New Zealand. The criminals will get the guns regardless. Gun control only makes the innocent defenceless but NZ doesn't have a constitution so that is how it was able to be done.

No system is 'perfect'.. because it involves people. And people, rather famously, are imperfect.

But just because you can't stop all crimes doesn't mean you should throw away the justice system... so why do the GOP throw up their hands and say 'Well, we can't stop all gun violence, so... here. Have a gun, kid!"?

Oh yeah... NRA money.

UK had the same attitude to guns after the Dunblane primary school massacre. We've had no school shootings since. USA has them every week.

As a NZer who has voted for Jacinda (and who will again) it is heartening to read so many comments from other people not from NZ who see her the same as I do, a caring leader who is passionate about our country. As heartening as that is, it is equally saddening to know what her popularity is becoming at home, because people don't appreciate or understand the decisions she has had to make and some view her as dictatorial or a "communist". Personally I am thankful of her leadership through this time and looking at the political landscape here in NZ at the start of Covid and even now, there is no one else I would have wanted in charge guiding us through these times.

Look at the western countries with tougher gun regulation. (NZ, Australia, UK, European countries etc).
They have hardly any mass shootings
Then look at the USA that promotes guns ownership without regulation, where a child can legally get hold of an automatic assault rifle.
Twenty states have minimum age laws ranging from 14 to 21, but in the remaining 30 states it’s legal for a child to possess an assault rifle.
Its disgraceful that the spineless GOP dont want to change this. The GOP think its perfectly OK for a child to go & get an assault rifle.
Need I say more...?

PM Ardern after one mass shooting in New Zealand: "When we saw something like that happen, everyone said 'Never again!' Then it was incombent on us as politicians to respond to that." Wouldn't that be amazing if we had enough republican senators willing to reject NRA/gun manufacturers money and DO THE RIGHT THING? Then their "thoughts and prayers" would really mean something.

What an amazing leader. And a mother, too. To all those American women (the embarrassing and ignorant ones) who have said women can't lead (you know who you are) bow your heads in shame. She helps prove the falsehood of your claims.

I remember an image of this woman with a scarf around her head embracing a family member of one of the victims and I remember thinking why can't we in the US elect people like her??
