Correatown - "LaSerena"

September 3, 2009

It was mid-afternoon on probably the hottest day of the summer when I met up with Angela Correa, aka Correatown, at her cozy apartment in Los Feliz (proper). Literally every inch of the little living room was stacked with instruments, drums, amps; even half the coffee table was dedicated to holding a wurli (she had just finished up a rehearsal for a KCR performance with Tom Brosseau the next day). The countertops were covered with various arts and crafts projects, including watercolor paper she was tediously cutting into custom EP covers. Reluctantly, we closed up the windows and turned off the fans to record (we had to re-open them after each take to let in some cooler, albeit still really warm air).

The Correatown albums are notably lush with instrumentation and careful arrangements, but their soul is undeniably in Angela's voice and delivery. Clever and pointed lyrics range from playful self-reflection to melancholy bordering on cryptic ("My lips are stained, with the blood on your hands" in LaSerena). There is a quality here that so seductive and spellbinding. And her range will probably give you the chills.

Angela played four songs that day with her acoustic guitar, including a couple new ones.

@keytrix You have to make music that appeals to the most people at once while wearing the least amount of clothes to get contracts like that. Ms. Correa is an actual musician so she doesn't count.
