I love those old Subarus, would love to have one. Had a 78' Brat in the 90s that I bought for $300- I think it only needed a new battery. At that time, people mostly thought they were oddball vehicles and there wasn't much demand for strange looking 20 year old half car-half trucks. My Uncle and Aunt bought a new Subaru 4x4 wagon in 1979. They live on a hill w a dirt road that gets a lot of snow in the winter. That thing would usually come up the hill whether it was plowed or not. The one time it didn't was when a heavy snow fell and the car pushed along until so much snow had packed under the front axle that the front wheels were lifted off the ground. Completely stock, except for its snow tires.

I lived in CA back in the 70s-90s and I remember seeing old Subaru’s beat to death going up and down I-80 through the Sierra Nevada Mountains . The car falls apart before the engine. Same with 88-91 Honda d-21 engines

Will the people in the back continue to be your friends after the ride in the back?

That was a high optioned car with the t top sunroofs the hidden side step and the seats in the back were all options on those cars so whoever bought that one seemed to check all the option boxes. It's a cool car needs a new dash since that one is all cracked up but for 700 bucks it looks like a good deal

The ultimate chicken tax ride! My first memory of any Subaru was riding in the back seats of my aunts 78 Brat. She got it band new too! It was the start of many Subarus she owned.

I'm pretty sure the visors on the roof hatches are wind deflectors. Also, the straps on the rear bulkhead behind the seats are for storing the hatches if you detach them.

My good friends dad always had the pick up/brat for his work then as well had an estate version of this also.
This was back in the 80s and his dad still has them now.
If they are hydraulic tappets or manual they may need adjustment or replaced.
Quite cheep he got the parts for these than £35.

You can swap the EA engine 68 hp 1600 for an EJ engine 2.0 up to 2.5 turbo that range from somewhere around 140hp to over 300 hp for STI 2500 turbo the small hp engines you can buy an adapter plate for $123 but the higher hp engine you will need a different transmission to handle it. I am gathering parts for my build now. we decided to go full blown STI drive train transfer.
