The great possibility of equation E=mc^2 was the very high value of c hich meant that handful of matter can give vast amount of energy even if a small fractionof it could be converted into energy.But problem was that particles in the nucleus of atom were bounded by immensly strong bonds and that required vast amount of energy to disintegrate a nuclei and thus the gain would be minimal.Then somebody invented chain nuclear reactions and the problem was solved .Human nature is to make destructive thing first.So atombomb was made first and afterwards chain reactions were used to produce electricity.
