“Why did Soviet soldiers boil their ammo?” THEY BOILED WHAT

The Soviets in Afghanistan also put hand grenades in glass cups before pulling the pin and tossing them. This was because they often engaged enemies downhill from them, and the grenades would go off before they got to the target. The glass kept the handle of the grenade in place even with the pin pulled do it wouldn't detonate prematurely, then once it landed the glass broke, releasing the handle and letting the grenade detonate.

That went well into Chechen campaigns. Water, meat were traded for ammo. They boiled it too.
There was also a story when a small boy came to the outpost asking for a grenade in exchange for water. They traded him a grenade with a modified fuze. It was shortened from 3-4 sec delay to about 1 sec. The same week they heard an explosion near the camp. An old man was found dead, the grenade was supposed to be thrown at the outpost but exploded too soon.

At least they didn't "cook" their ammo. That has a completely different meaning.

All Russian/Soviet small arms Ammunition have a wax liner around the primer and mouth of each bullet.(it's usually Red or Green) It helps keep water and Moisture out of Cartridge..By boiling the ammo you are melting away that wax Protection and getting the primer and powder wet making the Cartridge's useless

The effect is even better than described. Boiling the ammunition does not render it useless. Smokeless powder does not lose its potency after exposure to water. However, once it dries out, the ammo becomes unreliable. Some will fire fine, leaving the end user with confidence and leading them to take that ammo into a firefight. Some rounds will have dislodged the priming compound leading to duds and squibs. A dud is mostly harmless, but a squib will require removal of the slug from the barrel. Failing to recognize a squib and trying to shoot a subsequent round from the obstructed barrel will cause a catastrophic malfunction which will destroy the rifle and/or harm the shooter. It's an insidious trick that will keep the enemy coming back for ammo from your soldiers.

The rations of Soviet soldiers consisted mainly of canned food. And it order to somehow diversify their menu, they began boiling their bullets into soup.

Boiling didn't remove the laquer coating on the rounds. Heating the cartridges in boiling water increased the pressure in the cartridge, and expel air. Letting the ammo cool in the water caused a lower pressure in the casing, drawing water in and wetting the powder, rendering the rounds useless.

My grandpa served in the Afghan war and I have a sad story about food from then that he told me. Him and his unit were in Herat I think it was and my grandpa and his friend went to get what he called "Meat wraps"(I think he meant a Shawarma) from a street food vender. They sat down and were next to each other but like my grandpa's friend was facing him and they were talking a little, about home nonetheless to make it even more unfortunate and my grandpa's friend ironically said something along the lines of, "Well, that's war I guess. When we get home we can eat without worrying about getting killed" and took one bite of his food, and a bullet hit him right where his nose was and blew the back of his head out. My grandpa started choking on his food from the shock and coughed it up, grabbed his rifle, saw some guy running away with a Lee Enfield in hand and my gramps peppered him in the back with bullets. It wasn't until the rest of the unit got there that they found out it was like a 12 year old child soldier.
