If it's in the middle of the night must of the systems do updates and reboots and such every night for 5, 10, 15 minutes. Unless internet is really bad and they get stuck loading. Every now and then these "updates" happen during random times but they try and schedule them during slowest time. But, you never know, it could have really been out of service and started working just for you because you have good karma!!

As a gas station employee I can tell you this happens all the time, the computer inside the pump had to reset. Happens every so often depends on how often that pump is used.

Even if the pump was inactive, there's a high likelyhood that you could've pushed the car to another pump in neutral. If you can't manage it alone, you could probably get a worker to help you if you asked nicely. Don't forget to tip them though!

My v8 truck made it 17 miles with fuel gauge saying 0 miles to empty as I was frantically looking for a fuel station. Had the same issue when I pulled up to a marathon. They didn’t have a working pump I had to wait 3 hours for them to fix it
