While we'd only have 16 hours this is something that is taken into consideration and they have preparations for it

All of our communications wouldn’t be down. The majority of Ham Radio operators build their home stations with backup battery storage, and using low-power (QRP / Morse Code), communications can still circle the Earth and those power supplies will keep their equipment running for days or weeks, depending on how many they have stored. Ham Radio operators also run many simulated scenarios on a regular basis to practice for such events, including a annual national event called Field Day where they literally set up their equipment outside and spend 24 hours contacting as many other operators as they can without using any commercial electricity whatsoever (typically generators and/or solar power). Quite the interesting, and extremely useful hobby. The only downside to this scenario is that only about .2% of the population are licensed, so it severely limits the scope of who can be reached with their resources.

Just so y'all don't worry. Most essential energy grids and system, E.I. emergency services, water, power, waste management, are EMP proof, so a solar flare wouldn't actually do anything to them. For the average person, you'd probably see a really amazing aurora display and then some of your electronics would die.
We'd be annoyed but if people stayed calm, which is highly unlikely, We'd be fine.
Honestly the unrest from an event like this would cause far much more damage than the actual event itself
