RTX 4080 vs 4090 - I’m Keeping The 4080

After having used both the RTX 4090 and 4080 Founders Editions I came to the conclusion that the Nvidia RTX 4080 is the better graphics card for me at the price that I bought it for. In this video I go over a few reasons why that is.

I was in the same boat honestly, the sad thing is people will see this sort of justification as "you're coping for your garbage purchase because you couldn't get a 4090." A lot of folks online tend to forget that it's entirely dependent on the individual and their use case; I've seen phrases like "if you have 4080 money you have 4090 money" I personally didn't want to spend another $200 dollars for a new psu that I know for sure will support a 4090 and any possible transient spikes so I ran with a 4080. Like if I ever was considering making the jump to 4k that would mean I would still need to shell out more money for a good high refresh 4k monitor as well, The 4080 and 4090 perform roughly the same at 1440p---people will say "but future proof because of VRAM" 3090 had 24GB VRAM and that didn't stop people from jumping to 40 series to take advantage of all the features the newest chips give you in modern games, so I think future proofing at this point is a moot point.
Anyways yeah returned my 4090 got a 4080 instead haven't regretted it.

my reason for wanting to go for the 4090 over the 4080 is that I already have had a 3080 for the past 2 years and a 4080 just doesn't seem like a big enough upgrade for the price.

I work from home and the 4080's power consumption to performance has been impressive. The idle power draw while i work is fantastic and it squeezed into my old be quiet! pure base 500dx.

All the stuff about the coupon codes and reward dollars could have been skipped.

I was in a similar situation. My PSU is 750 watts and is a quality PSU (Corsair). I paid $1199 for my 4080 vs $1699 for the 4090 plus a PSU for at least $100. Yeah, it's faster but the 4080 is still a monster and is faster than anything Nvidia has made, even the 3090ti. It's overkill for almost any game, even Cyberpunk is at 70-80 fps at 4K with DLSS. If money was no object I'd definitely buy the 4090 but it just didn't make sense. It's a massive upgrade from my 3070 which was BAD at 4K especially in MW2. The 4080 gets too much hate considering nothing from the 3000 series beats it and those cards were more money (3080ti, 3090 and 3090ti).

I had a 3080ti and I upgraded to the 4080 OC and it made a significant difference. A VERY significant difference. I play a lot of single player, open-world games like skyrim, fallout 4, cyberpunk, and everything I have is heavily moded. That being the case, it didn't matter what I threw at the 4080, it ate it up like candy. A 4090 to me is overkill. The 4080 owns anything I throw at it. Why would I waste $2000-2500+ on a 4090 when a 4080 is $1000. Why waste all that money when a 4080 can 4k MAX settings? I'm honestly very confused as to why people buy 4090s. Only thing I could see is if you wanted to play competitively for stupid fast frames, but that still doesn't make sense. Anyone playing to compete turns down all the settings and plays at like 1080p and will literally fine tune, and optimize their settings for the least latency and lag you can get. Anyways, my rant. I don't get the 4090.

just got a 4080, since i game at 2k resolution at 240hz, hoping this one last me a long time. (obviously not as long as my 1080ti did)

I've been there too and eventually picked 4080. My reasons are simillar to yours. I use 1440p 240hz monitor and not going to change it for 4k. The performance difference between 4080 and 4090 isn't big. So far it's 15-20 fps boost with much higher power consumption of 4090. For 1440p, 4080 is plenty :)

Food for thought: Think about the future. Are you buying a new card next year? If you're like me and buy a new gaming PC about every 5-6 years or so, wouldn't the 4090 get you significantly further than a 4080? That's what you're paying the extra for: longevity.

I went with a 4080 for the simple fact it still beats any last gen card out and 25fps for $1000+ dollars more is silly no matter how good a 4090 is, also won't notice these extra frames as well.
Even at Msrp the 4090 still isn't that attractive, there is also a use case with Ultrawide users as well vs 4k users, I don't game on 4k but recently hooked up my 10850k @5.1Ghz + 3090 to my 4k Qled and i used maxed RT settings i wasn't impressed and this was on cyberpunk getting 52-60fps maxed out so the 4090 is way overkill for what it's worth.

same thought process haha glad I'm not the only one, love my strix 4080 runs very cool and efficient and one of the lucky ones who didnt have coil whine 👍

Got my 4080 for $900 used and couldn’t be happier. Sadly 4090s used are still in the $1, 300-$1, 400 range so even harder to justify a $500 performance difference. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy a 4080 for over $1000 though

4090 leaves the pack at 4K. Simple as that. The CPUs are bottlenecking it. Most people won't spend that much but it's a class above the 4080. 16GB for a thousand is not good. Better off with a 7900 series.

your 4090 crashes were how exactly? like everytime you launch a game it crashes? also did you fix it by switching your pcie cables or hdmi/dp cables?

I did the same. I feel like the 4090 is meant for people that do 3d rendering

I think I am gonna get a 4080 Super. I play at ultrawide 4k (3840x1600) and my 3080 is really starting to struggle in these modern games sadly, and I wanted to get a new GPU before GTA VI and Monster Hunter Wilds.

RTX 4080 or the more efficient "4nm" 4080 Super is more than enough. But if there are scenarios where performance is more important, then you have to go with the 4090.
In my case, I upgraded from a 3090 Ti to the RTX 4090 and now my VR experience is superior and 4K is definitely no problem for me. As I am on AM4 (5800X3D), another big upgrade would not be right because of the possibility of a CPU bottleneck in the near future.

Switched from
Ryzen 9 5950X + RTX 3090 Ti

to

Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RTX 4090

This is actually a very big jump in gaming, especially in VR gaming. [4K and 1440p are now bloody fluid.]

I am trying to stay with the old AM4 platform as long as possible. I hope at least 5 years.

I ended up goin’ for the 4080 too & even when the ti comes out I won’t get it ‘cause let’s be honesty 10-15 fps difference is hardly even noticeable when you’re gaming. IT’S JUST A MARKETING STRATEGY KINDA LIKE WHAT APPLE DOES.

It’s human nature to what to have what you don’t possess & chase perfection in anything you like even if it means you have to compromise on price.

4080 is one of the latest GPU & it easily smokes all Nvidia’s GPU’s ‘xcept the 4090 SO YOU’RE STILL GOOD, SAVE YOUR MONEY

one difference you might not notice (but your K/D will) is your latency and input lag. With a more powerful GPU you will almost always have an advantage over people with less powerful GPU's because the better performing GPU will be able to render not just the frames BUT ALSO the inputs faster. just play a couple matches on COD with the input latency OFF and then play a couple matches with the input latency set to ULTRA and I promise you'll notice the difference. You'll constantly be asking yourself "how did he kill me first when my reaction time is practically impeccable?!"

it's not because your reaction time is slow but because your GPU's reaction time is slower.
