Timelapses of Cockroach Egg Cases Hatching!

I captured up-close macro timelapse sequences of cockroach egg cases hatching and roach nymphs emerging! I think it's both amazing and squirm-inducing footage! Featured here are an American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) and a German cockroach (Blattella germanica).

Thanks to Prof. Coby Schal & Rick Rick Santangelo for supplying the roaches! Thanks to Nicolás Galvez for assistance on this project.

The most interesting thing about this is how the egg case is this perfectly formed package that looks like it is made of the same thing as the cockroach's outer cuticle, and it's so neatly lined up with a precise number of young inside it.

I was never so torn between 'Aww' and 'Eww'. The hatching is disgusting, but just look at their tiny little heads :'D

If only they didn't like living where we live, they would just be another cool weirdly social beetle to admire.

This video was recommended while I'm searching for air fryer chicken recipes and iced coffee! Nice!

From our POV, it's kinda hard to fathom how such a small package can bear so many units inside that hatch at the same time.

Yup, gross but fascinating. I always wondered how they hatched 😅

Cockroaches are born from a little suitcase that's kind of cute.

This reminds me of when mantis hatch from their egg casing as well. Way more chaotic but similar nonetheless. At least their heads look really similar. Also their egg casing reminds me of a clutch purse almost to a tee. It's kind of crazy how some species of sharks have different shapes but similar egg casings as cockroaches. This world is amazing!

this is honestly way less gross than vertebrate birthing IMO, thanks for this fascinating footage!

Thank you for this!
I used to have a colony of Death's Head Roaches as a teenager and I actually was able to experience some of those births life. And honestly, it was adorable to see.

Living in South Florida and growing up in the less desirable neighborhoods. I grew up seeing these eggs all the time. For the longest I didn't know what they were. Nothing is worse then seeing your floors and counters move!!
