Top Gun is a 1986 American action film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., and was inspired by an article titled "Top Guns", written by Ehud Yonay and published in California magazine three years earlier. The film stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, with Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt in supporting roles. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards), are given the chance to train at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.

Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from film critics. Four weeks after release, the number of theaters showing it increased by 45 percent. Despite its initial mixed critical reaction, the film was a huge commercial hit, grossing $357 million globally against a production budget of $15 million. Top Gun was the highest grossing domestic film of 1986. The film maintained its popularity over the years and earned an IMAX 3D re-release in 2013. Additionally, the soundtrack to the film has since become one of the most popular movie soundtracks to date, reaching 9× Platinum certification. The film won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for "Take My Breath Away" performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, released 36 years later on May 27, 2022 and surpassed the original film both critically and commercially.

The missed opportunity to explore misogyny in the Navy comment is exactly why the movie was so popular. Hollywood has become dull and everyone is tired of woke movies. Did any of them actually reach any form of success? This franchise is aimed at the testosterone fueled male ego with enough shirtless abs for the female audience. I'm sure Tom Cruise getting in touch with his feelings isn't the crowd they are going for. Pheonix and Bob served their purpose as did all the other shirtless airmen in the original top gun that never spoke much beyond the volleyball scenes. Let's face it, it was nice to have a fun movie again!

Intresting I wonder if top gun 3 will shine more on other pilots while Maverick deals with a stand alone mission so that when this movie is over he can take up the teaching post and let the younger ones fly. I also wonder what will happen when the time comes for drones and AI to take to the sky watching everywhere so that if there is smoke brewing a war fire it can be put out quickly so the world doesn’t need to get pulled into crazy battles again?

TC is why we watch. It is why MI is making version 8. If the story does not focus on the hero it will be more like watching a TV series vs a movie. It will not work. People today want a hero / savior.

A story where Maverick is helping the Ukraine 🇺🇦 military by being a Pilot Instructor would be good. There could be a coalition of international fighter pilots who volunteer for a strike mission on Russia 🇷🇺. Otherwise a strike mission on drug cartels in Mexico working with U.S Special Operations Forces Personnel would definitely be a on the edge of your seat movie story. Both worth a shot to check out as they relate to ongoing real world events.

Why don’t they bring back Maverick’s instructor from the first top gun who knew his father who could be shown him in retirement but needed to keep Maverick on a straight path for the rest of his career as a test pilot /instructor for his fathers last words before he died and what his wishes are for Maverick and what he needs to do to keep his father’s wish or bring back iceman’s wife and ask him or gives him all of iceman ‘s memorabilia and finds something shocking or something he needs to follow through on for iceman’s legacy
Or Penny’s father comes into the picture as a well decorated admiral who did everything by the book but broke some barriers to be the best and needs to teach Maverick a few lessons before he is allowed to marry his daughter penny and then decides to call him the son he never had
While rooster and his sidekick as we know as rivals in the next top gun and fights to be the best and puts both their lives in jeopardy and Mavericknerds to save them both and put them on the right path where a fighter pilot is a patriotic challenging career where family and friends are more important in life but balancing their careers and family and friends part can be more of a challenge than fighting the enemy
But being the best top gun is the balance between the two and Maverick who s family he only had was goose had to learn the importance to survive and make his life worth while by the love of a friend who was
Like family made him understand the importance of his love for goose and the love for being the best had to be equal for Maverick he could not separate the 2 or put one secondary balance is the key to success and to be the best pilot and to be the best family man
