How FAST can you beat Pokemon Red/Blue with just a Hypno?

Psychic Pokemon tend to be overpowered in Generation 1 Pokemon games, but how about one that is slow and with a bad movepool. Surely it will struggle... right?

-Rules and Explanations-
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves

*Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional* 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be *some* glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

“I forgot I had Hypnosis.” If only you could have remembered the name of the Pokémon you were doing the run with!

You know this run is going to go well when he's halfway through the video and _isn't_ at the elite four

Waiting patiently for the starmie run, has all the tools we'd expect from a top tier gen 1 run

The extra bulk makes it way less of a glass canon so overall its a much easier time. To be able to boost with meditate surely also was a big plus.

"You see, Hypno only starts off with Confusion"
*stares at Hypnosis and Disable*
I know you know how broken those moves are Gen 1.

Would honestly be curious how Aerodactyl would do with its high critical-hit rate yet terrible movepool.

“Military gift shop manager surge” just skipped private surge to something even funnier

I love Hypno. When I played gen 1 as a kid I usually caught Drowzee instead of Abra. Hypno quickly became a staple in future playthroughs.

The reason I had Hypno was because all the other kids in my class had Alakazam. I wanted to my own person, not the twentieth kid with an Alakazam.

Fun Fact: Hypno is the only pokemon that sees/saw play in RBY Ubers, OU, and UU. The tiers are determined by usage, and by usage Hypno is in UU, however it saw niche but respectable usage in OU and Ubers as a psychic type counter, since psychic is the only good type that can take a hit from psychic types, and Hypno has access to hypnosis with gen 1 OP sleep mechanics. It saw play in OU as a potential counter to Exeggutor and Alakazam, and in Ubers as a potential counter to Mewtwo (for reference: the only real Mewtwo counter in Ubers is another Mewtwo, so this is actually a fairly useful role). In UU it operated as both a standard sweeper and a psychic counter again.

While Hypno performed exceptionally well, this run is also a great showcase of how screwed over some Pokémon were by the Special stat split, another one being Dewgong (which should receive better stats or an evolution in a future generation IMO - perhaps Ursaluna-style, which doesn't make it so that only a regional variant can evolve). I'm interested in seeing how a run with Seel or Dewgong would go!

The luck in this run was like a pendulum, constantly swinging back and forth

I love how Lt. Surge has become the punching bag of the run now that Bruno has given him trouble a few times.

I always felt like Gen 1 Hypno was nuts. Bulky, great typing, and gets outstanding benefits from the combined Special stat.

After letting it go for a few episodes to see how I feel, I wanna offer my opinion on the new intro spot in the video. And personally, I love it. I feel the cold open explaining the run flows great into the intro.

I played pokemon blue kaizo recently and i really appreciate that bruno lost his spot on the elite 4.

Would love to see a kaizo run from you in the future as well, you've got some of the most impressive gen1 knowledge and strats of any youtuber I've seen and it'd be awesome to see

I used a Hypno in my pokemon Yellow playthrough, and I was honestly amazed at how good it was. I mean, sure, it's a psychic type, but its movepool leaves a lot to be desired. I ended up using Psychic/Hypnosis/Dream Eater, with its last slot used for flash. While only have 1 type of move on a pokemon might seem odd, it worked effectively - the Psychic type was very op, and I managed to bully my way past Sabrina using Hypnosis + Dream Eater as well.
