Have you ever been confused about book-art terminology? What's a gluebook and how is it different than a scrapbook? How about the difference between a junk journal and an altered book?

In this video I talk about what these terms refer to, and then show you examples. Here are the chapters if you want to skip around:

00:00 Intro and what is book arts?
01:02 what's a scrapbook?
04:26 what's a junk journal?
10:14 what's an altered book?
13:45 what's a gluebook?

I talk about what each one is, and also talk about how they can overlap. For example, you can create a junk journal that you then use as a gluebook.

I fell in love with all your work and explanations . I have made books out of cereal boxes. Loved doing it. You have cleared up any questions I wanted to ask. I have subscribed to all your info and even learning what to put on pages to look like I am making something junky or beautiful. I am a Grandma 80 YOUNG and never too old to learn something new. Thank you.

Thank you, this is the best explanation I've seen of the different book arts. I love how you showed the different styles of junk journals, and that it's okay to use digitals, etc. Some people frown on using anything that isn't considered junk but I think that's too limiting. Really good explanation about glue books too, and how several different types can be merged, like junk journal plus glue book. Makes so much more sense now. 😊

Wowzers Margaret - I have not seen anything like this before. All the items you shared are beautiful and inspiring. I am new to paper crafting having made my first card this year. I spent a fortune on card making supplies and while I don’t regret buying them (they are pretty and delightful) I can’t continue to splash out to anything like that level. I couldn’t help but notice you are recycling and making beautiful creations from items that might well have ended up in the trash. I have subscribed and hope your inspiration and guidance will show me ways to continue contentedly creating whilst being more resourceful. Thank you for sharing. ❤

Great video Margarete! My hubby was sitting next to me when I was watching it and I said "See, I'm not the only one who saves junk!" Your work is amazing. Thank you!

Holy Moly!
That Postal Junk Journal is just wonderful! I'm a USPS mail carrier, and seeing the little I could from you thumbing through it made me unreasonably happy! It looks like a snapshot of any business day at the Post Office.
I didn't realize I wanted to make something with a single theme until I saw this. You have truly helped me with my creative process, showing me I do not have to include every idea in a single piece.
Outlining different creation processes for different types of books was extremely technically informative as well!
Thank you so much for taking time to create and post this video!
😊

I love it! I'm making a Bible gluebook but didn't realize at the time what the differences are. Scrapbooks are so cool and I keep planning on finishing mine, but I rarely start it other than adding stuff to particular pages. A gluebook sounds like a better way to start for someone like me that is scatterbrained lol!

Wow, when you said "scrapbook" I imagined the ones you buy at the store - I have many of those kinds (empty) but love your idea of one. One of these days I swear I'll print my photo's and make an imaginative one like yours.

Your explanation of the differences and how they can be combined certainly helps me understand ‘what’ I’ve actually been doing. LOL Thanks so much for posting this. I just found you thru Ceri the Crafter and his YouTube channel.

Thanks for the definitions. I learn from everybody. Your books are wonderful, inspiring. That red book: 💋. I like to call most things BOOKS. That seems a good catch-all.

I really liked your VERY last book--THE RED BOOK glue book. I believe between all the types of book art because I am impatient and want instant results my best choice will be glue books. I can create pockets, tucks and sewn-trimmed pages, flip-outs and glue them in without worrying about binding or a book cover. I just have to make sure I don't add too much without estimating what to take away. Thank you for your informative video! You now have a new subscriber!

Wow! Thankyou so much! This is the only video that ive found that has explained perfectly the differences of each type of these book arts. Its because of the similar yet different journals that are confusing which has prevented me from getting started with these. As you can probably guess, i love them all but I'll m now very clear as to what each one is! Fantastic video!!! ❤

Very interesting. I did not know about all these different terms nor what exactly they meant. Now I know what the distinction is between them. And it is great to know that each of these can also be in part all of them at the same time. Thank you for the info.

I have never made a junk journal, but admire all the work that goes into making one. I do turn old books into collage books. I take out some of the pages and then glue pages together, to make them stonger. Also I decorate the covers. For instance I have one book that is the collages that I did for Margarete's 2021 challenge. It's a wonderful keepsake for me.

Hi Margarete, I am so glad to finaly get a real explanation about these different kinds of books and also to be happy to now call myself a " book artist" 😄, according what you said. I make junk journals, art journals, glue books in altered ones for almost 10 years and it is the first time I watch a video explaning what book art is about... Thank you for having done it. I love the examples you have showed. They are so beautiful work of art.... You make me feel like creating more of these. (all kinds but scrapbooks).
TFS. Hugs from France.

Great video, thanks so much, Margarete! Seems to me the book arts world needs to come up with a new term for a book that is made from new materials e.g. printables, decorative paper, ribbon, tags etc.
I decided to call a couple of books I made “eclectic books.” They were wedding journals which told a story (scrapbook), made from an old book (altered book), that included ephemera- napkin, flower petals, place card, program from the wedding, gleefully grabbed by me before going into the garbage (junk journal), and it had items glued onto the pages (glue book). So complete overlap of categories!
I think clarification of terms is important and recognition of the overlapping of categories is as well, and your effort to do is appreciated.
