Linux Deepin 15.3 – OS Review

Review of the glamorous Linux Deepin 15.3 distro from China (other languages are available).
I’m certainly impressed with the way it looks and some of the unique apps they have provided like the Deepin Software Centre, DMusic, and DPlayer. However there are several “Chinglish” translation mistakes.

I use this distro day to day on my laptop, and love it. Numix circle icons work nicely and runs smoothly. I wish it displayed hours left in my battery and worked with touchscreen in the app menu.

My favourite distro. But I loved the 14.3 version more. They changed quite a lot of things since, which is actually quite fine, but I miss the unique desktop grid. :)

KDE actually has a kcm module available for it's settings app that gives you some control over grub.

I'm surprised you didn't show off switching between fashion and efficient mode for the dock.

I find this distro interesting, but I find the control panel on the side cool but I prefer everything constant, I want everything just in a window like Kde or gnome, also this distro takes a bit too many horses to run. I find this distro would be compelling to people who like elementary OS.

files are locked and I cannot edit any file as it is read only... how do I sort it out... help!!!

This distro is really good, run it for a while however, the update manager is a big issue with this distro in that it seems to randomly pick out a different mirror or the fastest mirror you selected is no longer responding, if they can sort that out I believe this is a real winner!! also if you can't find what your'e looking for in that beautiful aesthetically pleasing store install synaptic package manager and you will find it in there, there's also a backgrounds or wallpaper folder in the pictures folder and any pics placed in there will show up in the wallpaper selector.

I like Deepin personally I even use it on my desktop. My only complaint is that, even when selected the option to not use 24 hour time, it still shows 24 hour time : I

Left hand side? last time I looked at Deepin, the dock was on the bottom. That was 15.2, so things may have changed. I thought there was also a notice bubble which comes up saying performance is reduced if in VM. Regardless, a user will need more than a 5-6yo dual core box for snappy performance, but that's true on almost any decent desktop (hint: no 'lightweight' desktops which do SFA OOTB are not what new users want). Unless you're a "power user" and think everyone else only needs terminal access right away. FWIW, Deepin does give terminal access anyway.
Manjaro has a spin with Deepin and the Vertex-Maia theme works pretty well with Deepin. Again, it's not a lightweight desktop, but I prefer the look.

beautiful and seemingly easy to use, but limited and buggy. So from what i understand Deepin is not really an OS but more of a desktop environment (like KDE, gnome, mate etc.) if so I would love to see this on a more trusted and polished OS, like maybe Ubuntu

What are the minimum requirements for this operating system v15.3 and does it work in 32bit

Have you tried allocating more vRam to the Virtual Machine? Because it seems like OS needs Graphics Acceleration for the visual effects which might explain the lag

For me, as a power user you might say, few of these reviews are of particular use, thus I don't usually get involved, but I did just stumble upon GoboLinux, which is something different, and I'd very much like to hear your perspective on it, should you care to take a stab at it.

i downloaded 15.3 iso but could not install due to some error. still using 15.1

not really much to do with the video but I did work with quite an variety of linux distros from arch linux/slackware to ubuntu I always came back to debian, it just works well too good for me, especially since all changes are usually reversible and it's installer is a godsend (for me at least) and well, it suits my stability needs as I only restart my laptop once a few months.
