How To Remove Chrome From Plastic (Without Destroying The Plastic)

Super simple, non destructive way to get failed chrome off of plastic. All you need is a decent heat gun and something pointy. I'm using the bubbly grille off my 2008 Ford F-250 for this one. These trucks are really prone to this for some reason

Made me so nervous seeing you grab that chrome plating with your bare hands. I’ve filleted myself a few times on that stuff. Sharp as a razor

“Ford especially seems to have perfected doing the worst job possible” 😂 😂 😂

Have another one for you while you are at it. Take that same type of heat gun and a plastic scraper and remove your old window tinting if the need arises. That is my LIKE button for you.

I'm 63 and have owned many Fords in my lifetime. One thing i can say is the quality has continually gone down. Great video

I have also been searching for the best way to do this. Thanks for the help!

That chrome veneer is just terrible. It bubbles and splits and looks like someone tried to cover the plastic with aluminum foil. Thanks for showing how you removed it!

Possibly a dumb question... Would using a spray bottle of water to speed the cooling change the results of delaminating the plastic?

Mine add already bubbled up so i took a sharp egdge to cut into the bubbled chrome and started to peel by hand then i took my power washer and sprayed grill to lift up more chrome and start peeling again. Took about an hour and a half.

That is why I bought my 21 F150 with the sport package. No fake chrome.

Thanks man! I have a chrome grill on my Tundra and I hate reapplying Plastidip every few months, and painting over that chrome is impossible! I’m doing this and then painting it with color match paint for sure!

was litterally trying this earlier (2015 mustang gt) every other piece is covered in the chrome stuff, i hate it, but turns up i just wasn’t holding the heat gun long enough, thanks :)

wish i'd watched this a couple of hours ago. i already own a heat gun, just never occurs to me that i should use it. maybe i scuffed it up enough? already painted it, but it's toyota, so at least they did it right, and it only had two small bubbles in it to start

Awesome I tried everything to get the chrome off with no success. I thought about heat but wasnt sure if it would warp the plastic. I'll give it a try.

Great for the places that are bubbled already, but not so great for the adhered!

A side question that is not related.. If I want to cut a piece of chrome trim molding to shorten the length, will cutting crack the chrome on the surrounding resulting in peeling. Want to cut a piece of chrome plated ABS molding that is not specifically for my car and want to install it on mine.
