Se puede decir que es una canción Frankenstein, ya que está elaborada con pedazos de otras canciones, como son 'Theme For Great Cities' de los Simple Minds (elementos musicales) y de 'Bohemian Rhapsody' de Queen (elementos vocales), aunque quizás sea más correcto decir que se basa en (y tomó su título de) 'The Real Life' de Corporation Of One, una canción de 1989 que incluía los mismos elementos de Simple Minds y Queen.
El lanzamiento original de la versión de Dave Lee fue acreditado como The Real Life (Joey Negro Mix) por Corporation Of One Meets Jakatta, y en donde Jakatta y Joey Negro son dos alias utilizados por Dave Lee, que para el lanzamiento oficial adoptó un nuevo y ocasional seudónimo, Raven Maize.
