@Adam:  You can find Kilz in the paint department of Lowes or other stores that carry paint.  It's primarily used to cover ceilings that show water stains and the like.

Eric what help your board from warping and splitting. cut your wood a little longer and dip the ends in wax only on the end grain. when ready to make a sign you cut the ends off.
