The Vezio castle stands on a promontory at the bottom of the Val d'Esino and overlooks the town of Varenna. The castle is located almost entirely in the territory of Varenna, and for a small portion in the territory of Perledo. In 1891 some tombs dating back to the Iron Age were discovered and in 1956 iron swords, helmets and arrows with triangular spikes emerged. The main tower has a square battlements equal to that of the castle of Cly in Valle d'Aosta. The fortress followed the fate of Varenna, to which it was joined by walls that descended to the lake, defending the village. It became an episcopal fief together with Varenna. Later it became the property of the Lattuada di Lierna family for a long time.
